Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup whole milk, warmed (about 110°F)

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs, plus 1 for egg wash

2 teaspoons active dry yeast

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup colorful Easter egg candies (or dyed boiled eggs)

Zest of 1 lemon

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

Prep the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warmed milk and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until foamy. This activates the yeast.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon (if using). Make a well in the center.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, almond extract, and lemon zest. Pour the yeast mixture and the egg mixture into the well of the dry ingredients.

Knead the Dough: Gradually mix the flour into the wet ingredients until a dough begins to form. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.

First Rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and place it in a warm area to rise for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Shape the Bread: Once risen, punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 3 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope (about 12-14 inches). Braid the three ropes together and shape them into a circle or twist.

Add the Eggs: If you’re using dyed eggs, place them securely into the braid. If you’re using candies, you can sprinkle them in between strands of dough after shaping.

Second Rise: Place the shaped wreath on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover it again with a cloth and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Egg Wash: Beat the remaining egg and brush it over the surface of the bread for a shiny finish.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Cool and Serve: Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack. Slice to serve once cooled, and enjoy this beautiful Easter centerpiece!
