Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup milk

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup boiling water

Optional: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and cocoa powder until well combined.

Stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth. The batter will be thick; that's okay!

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.

In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and boiling water. Carefully pour this mixture over the batter without stirring.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cake is set around the edges and slightly gooey in the center.

Allow the cake to cool for a few minutes before serving. It will be hot and gooey with a fudgy layer on the bottom.

Serve warm, topped with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
