Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for the fudge layer)

2 cups boiling water

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish or an equivalent round dish.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until thoroughly combined.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; do not overmix. The batter will be thick.

Spread Batter: Spread the batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.

Prepare the Fudge Layer: In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar and the 1/2 cup of cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cake batter in the baking dish.

Add Boiling Water: Gradually pour the boiling water over the top of the cake and fudge layers. Do not stir — this will create a pudding-like sauce at the bottom.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the cake is set and the top looks slightly glossy. A toothpick inserted into the cake portion should come out clean, but the fudge layer may remain gooey.

Cool and Serve: Allow the cake to cool for a few minutes before serving. This cake is best served warm, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added decadence.
