Ham and Cheese Sticks

1 package of puff pastry sheets (2 sheets, thawed)

8 slices of thinly sliced ham (preferably smoked or honey-baked)

8 slices of cheese (Swiss or cheddar work well)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper to taste

Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup.

    Prepare the Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheets to smooth out any creases and slightly increase their size. Cut each sheet into rectangles (approximately 4x6 inches).

      Layer the Fillings: On one half of each pastry rectangle, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard (if using). Lay down a slice of ham followed by a slice of cheese on top, leaving a small border around the edges.

        Season: Sprinkle garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and pepper over the cheese for added flavor.

          Fold and Seal: Fold the other half of the pastry rectangle over the filled side to create a pocket. Use a fork to press down the edges and seal them well to prevent any filling from spilling out during baking.

            Egg Wash: Brush the tops of each pastry stick with the beaten egg, ensuring even coverage. This will give them a beautiful golden color once baked.

              Sprinkle Sesame Seeds: If you like, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for an added crunch and flavor.

                Bake: Place the prepared ham and cheese sticks on the lined baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
