Ingredients

1 loaf of thick sliced challah or brioche bread

6 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp nutmeg

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

Powdered sugar for dusting

Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Begin by cutting the challah or brioche into 1-inch cubes. Spread the cubes evenly in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.

Make the Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine with Bread: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, making sure all the bread is thoroughly soaked. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down into the liquid.

Create the Cinnamon Swirl: In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and melted butter. Drizzle this mixture over the soaked bread cubes, and use a knife to swirl it through the bread gently.

Chill: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight. This allows the bread to absorb the custard mixture fully.

Bake: When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the baking dish from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.

Add Pecans: If using, sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the top of the mixture.

Cook: Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set. If the top starts to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.

Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for about 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup on the side.
