Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar, packed

½ cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Sea salt flakes (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal later.

Cream the Butters and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract until well combined.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

Mix Them Together: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet batter, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Fold in Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Layer the Caramel: Spread half of the cookie dough evenly into the prepared baking pan. Pour the caramel sauce over this layer, making sure to cover it completely.

Top with Remaining Dough: Spoon the remaining cookie dough in dollops over the caramel layer. Use a spatula to spread it as best as you can, but don't worry if it isn't perfectly smooth.

Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs (not wet).

Cool and Cut: Allow the bars to cool in the pan on a wire rack for at least 20-30 minutes. Once cooled, use the parchment paper to lift the bars out, then cut into squares or rectangles.

Finish with a Sprinkle: If desired, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt flakes on top of the warm bars to enhance the flavors before they fully set.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve slightly warm or at room temperature. They are fantastic on their own or paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
