Ingredients

2 large yellow onions

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs (panko works great)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon pepper

1 large egg

Cooking spray

Instructions

Slice the Onions: Begin by peeling the onions and slicing them into ½-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.

Prepare the Buttermilk Mixture: In a shallow bowl, pour in the buttermilk and add a pinch of salt. Stir well to combine.

Create the Coating: In another bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. In a third bowl, beat the egg.

Coat the Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring into the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off. Next, dredge it in the flour mixture, pressing gently to ensure a good coating. Follow up by dipping it again in the egg, and finally coat it with the seasoned breadcrumbs. Repeat for all onion rings.

Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.

Spray and Air Fry: Lightly spray the basket of the air fryer with cooking spray. Place the onion rings in a single layer in the basket to avoid overcrowding. Spritz the tops with more cooking spray to help them crisp up.

Cooking Time: Air fry the onion rings for 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time, until they are golden brown and crispy. Adjust the time based on your air fryer model if necessary.

Enjoy: Once done, remove the onion rings from the fryer and let them cool slightly. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ranch dressing, BBQ sauce, or spicy ketchup.
