Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 4 large sweet potatoes (about 2 lb), peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Pecan Topping

  • 1 ½ cups pecan halves, roughly chopped
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of sea salt

Instructions

Mashing & Mixing the Base

  1. Mash the potatoes. Transfer the roasted sweet potatoes to a large bowl. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Using a potato masher or hand mixer, blend until smooth and slightly airy.
  2. Incorporate eggs and vanilla. Create a well in the center of the mash, pour in the beaten eggs and vanilla extract. Fold gently until fully incorporated; the eggs will give the casserole a custard‑like lift as it bakes.
  3. Spread into a dish. Lightly grease a 9‑x‑13‑inch baking dish. Evenly spread the sweet‑potato mixture, smoothing the top with a spatula. This creates an even base for the topping to adhere.

Making the Pecan Topping

  1. Combine dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, mix chopped pecans, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt. The sugar will caramelize, while the cinnamon reinforces the warm flavor profile.
  2. Add wet components. Drizzle the melted butter and maple syrup over the pecan mixture. Stir until everything is evenly coated; the butter and syrup create a glossy, sticky glaze that will turn golden during baking.
  3. Layer on the casserole. Sprinkle the topping uniformly over the sweet‑potato base, pressing lightly so it adheres. An even layer ensures consistent browning and crunch.
