Discrepancies Exposed
“The family trust?” I shot back, my voice sharper than I intended. “Is that what this is about?”
Dad shifted uncomfortably in his chair, his eyes darting between me and Marissa. “It’s about making responsible decisions for the future.”
I leaned forward, urgency in my voice. “Responsible decisions for who? You and Evan? Because I’ve looked at the finances, and it’s glaringly obvious that you’ve favored him every step of the way.”
“That’s not true,” Dad protested, his confidence wavering.
Mom's smile faded, replaced by a worried frown. I watched her hands twist around the napkin in her lap. “Can we discuss this calmly?”
I pressed on, feeling the weight of unspoken frustration lift slightly. “How many times did you miss my events? You were always there for Evan’s games, but when I graduated, you were nowhere to be seen.”
“We had our reasons,” Dad said, though his voice lacked conviction.
Marissa scribbled notes, glancing up at me with a mixture of encouragement and caution. I could sense the shifting atmosphere, each word adding tension to the air.
“Your reasons?” I scoffed. “Are you really going to say you chose a regular softball game over years of my sacrifices to keep this family afloat?”
“Sacrifices?” Evan mocked, crossing his arms. “You sound like a drama queen.”
I turned toward him, fury bubbling inside. “The truth hurts, doesn’t it? You never had to fight for anything.”
The Bombshell
“You’re just the golden child, always acting like you’re better than the rest of us,” Evan spat, his voice rising. “It’s pathetic.”
“Enough, both of you!” Mom intervened, her tone shifting to a desperate plea. “Can we just talk about this without insults?”
I shook my head, pressing on. “Why do you all pretend my accomplishments don’t matter? I worked hard, but you only care about Evan’s little victories.”
Dad’s brow furrowed, and his breaths became heavier. Just as I thought he might finally hear me, he dropped a bombshell, his voice low and grave.
“I’m planning to sell the family home to pay off my debts.”
Silence engulfed the room, the gravity of his words settling heavily over us.
“You can’t be serious,” I said, disbelief washing over me.
Before he could respond, I felt a surge of clarity. “You don’t even realize how devastating this is for me, do you?” I demanded, unwilling to let this opportunity slip away.
As I prepared to counter his statement, Dad’s next words shattered the moment. “I always intended to give the house to Evan.”
The air left my lungs. I froze, the implications of his confession crashing over me. “What?”
Suddenly, all my hard work felt meaningless as doubt crept in. Was I forever the outsider in a family that never truly accepted me?
