Searching for the Truth
Determined to find answers, I stood at the edge of the path where Hannah had vanished. The sun filtered through the trees, casting long shadows that made the familiar trail feel foreign and menacing.
I took a deep breath and stepped off the main trail. "Just a little farther," I whispered to myself. Every rustle of leaves sent chills down my spine, reminding me of how easily Hannah had disappeared.
After a few minutes, I stumbled upon a hidden area, like a secret world sealed off from the rest of the park. The ground was disturbed, the earth dark and soft like it had been recently dug up. My heart raced.
As I crouched down, I noticed an old tarp half-buried in the dirt. With trembling fingers, I pulled it away, revealing remnants of a campsite—a charred piece of wood, a faded soda can, and a child’s backpack.
My breath hitched as I recognized the pattern. It was the same blue with yellow stripes Hannah loved. Tears pricked my eyes. "No, this can’t be happening," I murmured, my thoughts spiraling.
I rifled through the backpack. Inside was a worn-out notebook full of scribbled notes. I flipped through the pages, my stomach twisting. There were cryptic messages and sketches that made no sense. Had Hannah been here?
I felt a tidal wave of urgency. I couldn’t keep this to myself. I needed to alert the police again. "They have to take this seriously," I murmured under my breath. I raced back to my car, adrenaline coursing through me.
A Chilling Warning
As I collected my thoughts on the drive to the station, I replayed the scene over and over in my head. I had to tell Mom. But what if she found out I was digging deeper? Would it hurt her more?
Suddenly, my phone buzzed against the console. I glanced down and saw an unknown number flashing on the screen. My heart dropped. Should I answer?
I hesitated, but something pushed me to pick it up. "Hello?" My voice quivered.
“You shouldn’t be looking for her,” the cold voice on the other end warned. “Stay away from the investigation.”
My pulse quickened. “Who is this? What do you know?”
“You’re in over your head. Leave it to the authorities. You’ve only scratched the surface.”
A rush of fear crept through me. “What do you mean?” But the line went dead.
Shaken, I drove home with thoughts ablaze. I couldn't back down now, but I also had to protect Mom. I had to make sure she was safe. What if this was all connected to her hidden truths?
Arriving home, I burst through the door. "Mom!" I called, the urgency spilling out of me. I headed straight to the kitchen, where she often sat with her Bible.
Just as I reached for her, a loud crash shattered the tense air. I whipped around to see the Bible shattered on the floor, its hidden contents spilling out. My heart stopped.
