On my wedding night I hid under the bed to surprise my husband. His mother came in instead, sat down on the mattress above me, and put a call on speaker.
Chapter 1: The Weight of Lies
On the night I married Grayson, I hid under our bed because I wanted to surprise him. My satin dress was still on. My veil had caught on the wooden frame above me. And I was lying there trying not to laugh, picturing his face when I crawled out and shouted ‘got you.’ Then the bedroom door opened. The footsteps were not his. They were his mother's. I know Lorna's heels the way you know a clock in your own house.
She crossed that room and sat down on the mattress directly above me. The springs came down against my back. I flattened myself against the floorboards and stopped breathing properly. A lighter clicked. And then cigarette smoke came drifting down under the bed. Grayson had told me his mother gave up years ago. But in that moment I was not thinking about the lie. I was thinking about the call she made next.
“Hello, Grayson? I’m in the bridal suite. Where’s your wife?” she asked, and she put him on speaker. His voice came out of that phone and I barely recognised it. “She’s probably wandering about with her friends somewhere,” he said. “Don’t worry, Mum. She has no idea what we’re doing.”
Everything in me went cold. Lorna gave a low little laugh and said, “Good. Is the apartment on the coast in her name yet?” “It is,” he replied. “I told her it would make her feel secure. She thinks I bought it for her. But I kept every receipt.”
That apartment was our wedding present to ourselves. He was the one who insisted it should be in my name alone. He told me a woman should always have something of her own. I believed that was love. It was a plan. Lorna took another drag and said, “She’s so easy to manage. That shabby little flat she took me to was pathetic.” My father is an engineer. I have never told Lorna that he is chief architect for one of the biggest aerospace contractors in the country. That shabby little flat belonged to my late grandmother.
Dad keeps it because his entire childhood is in it. She looked at it once and decided my family had nothing. Lorna said, “She thinks she married up. A girl like that won't fight people who know how the world works.” And Grayson laughed and said, “Exactly. Her father’s a nobody. She’ll be grateful for whatever we let her keep.” My eyes went, but not the way they had been going all day. I had spent two years loving a man who had been studying me… and now I knew what for. But what else hadn’t he told me?
Chapter 2: The Blueprint of Betrayal
I stayed under the bed long after the call ended, the scent of Lorna’s cigarettes a suffocating shroud. Each word replayed in my mind, a venomous loop of calculated deceit. Grayson hadn’t just been building a life with me; he’d been building a case. A case to take everything.
What happened just seconds later left everyone in the room completely speechless… (Continue to Part 2 →)
