Twenty Years of Silence: The Postcard That Changed Everything I Thought I Knew About My Missing Daughter

Twenty Years of Silence: The Postcard That Changed Everything I Thought I Knew About My Missing Daughter Save

Chasing Shadows

My heart raced as I stormed into the local library, adrenaline fueling my determination. The air smelled of old paper and dust, a scent that usually calmed me now felt suffocating.

“Do you have any information about disappearances in Aurevia?” I asked the librarian, my voice steadier than I felt. She pointed me toward the archives.

Hours slipped by as I pored over yellowing newspapers, my eyes scanning headlines that sent icy fingers down my spine. “Missing Girl” and “Search Efforts Continue” leapt out at me, each article unraveling the dark tapestry of events surrounding Elara's disappearance.

Then stumbled upon a series of articles discussing a figure dubbed “The Keeper.” My pulse quickened. This was the name I’d overheard in whispers back home, tales wrapped in fear and urban legend. Each piece linked him to several unsolved cases, including one referring to a child gone missing around the same time as Elara.

“The Keeper was said to lured kids away…”

My chest tightened as I read the details. Could Corin's work as a reporter have drawn him into something sinister? I needed to know—was he aware of this connection? The thought twisted like a knife in my gut.

With renewed fury, I gathered my notes and headed home, every step heavy with dread and determination. I would confront him—he owed me that much.

Unraveling the Truth

“Corin!” I shouted as I burst through the door, barely giving him a chance to react. “We need to talk. Now.”

His face drained of color as I dumped the articles onto the kitchen table. “What is this?” he asked, his voice low, wary.

“You knew! You knew about The Keeper. Why didn’t you tell me?” I felt the heat rising in my chest, frustration clawing its way out. “How could you keep this from me?”

Corin’s hands trembled slightly as he pushed the papers aside. “I didn’t want to put you in danger. I was investigating—”

“Investigating? For how long? How many stories did you write, and keep silent about what was really happening?” My voice broke.

He ran a hand through his hair, a sign of his distress. “I didn’t think it was connected, not until... not until after Elara disappeared.”

“You didn’t think? All those years of silence?” I struggled to keep my voice down, panic rising. “What else have you hidden from me?”

He looked me in the eye, the shame etched on his face. “I feared it would only bring more trouble.”

Just as I began processing his admission, a sharp knock echoed through the stillness of our home. My heart jumped. “Who could that be?”

Corin's expression shifted, a flicker of recognition crossing his features before he opened the door. A shadowy figure stood outside, cloaked in mystery.

“I have information about Elara,” the stranger declared, voice low and urgent. “But we need to talk privately.”

My breath hitched, emotions swirling as I glanced at Corin, searching for reassurance. Then I noticed a flash of recognition on his face, suggesting he might have known more than he ever admitted.
