I grabbed Leo's arm and pulled him out of the coffee shop. My heart raced as I glanced back at the door, half-expecting Clara to follow us. “We need to get home, now,” I whispered, my voice trembling.
Leo nodded, his eyes wide with confusion. “What’s happening, Mom?”
“I don’t know, but we’re not safe,” I said, fighting to keep my voice steady. My mind spun with thoughts of Andrew's past, wondering what kind of danger could still linger.
Once we were inside our apartment, I locked the door behind us and leaned against it, panting. “Should we call the police?” Leo suggested, but I hesitated.
“What would we even say? That your dad’s sister told us he was in trouble?” I paced the living room, anxiety gnawing at my insides.
“She said he was involved in something dangerous,” Leo reminded me, his brow furrowed. “What if it comes to find us?”
I felt a chill run down my spine. “We have to stay quiet, Leo. We can’t let anyone know we know.”
Just then, a loud knock echoed through the apartment. We both froze.
“Who is it?” I called, my voice barely audible.
“Delivery!” A deep voice responded from the other side. “Package for Leo!”
“What package?” I shot a glance at Leo, whose face was a mask of confusion. “We didn’t order anything.”
Another knock, more insistent this time. Panic clawed at my throat. “Stay back,” I instructed Leo, moving to the door to peer through the peephole.
What I saw sent a jolt of fear through me. A tall man stood there, clad in a leather jacket, scanning the hallway with an intensity that made my stomach twist.

I opened the door a crack, just enough to see his face, and felt an icy grip on my chest. “Can I help you?” I asked, trying to sound calm.
“I’m looking for Leo,” he said, his voice low and gravelly. “I need to talk to him.”
“Who are you?” I demanded, my heart pounding now. “Why do you need him?”
“Just a friend of the family,” he replied, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. But nothing about him felt friendly.
In that moment, my mind raced. Was this man connected to Andrew? “You need to leave,” I said, trying to shut the door, but he pushed back against it.
“You don’t understand,” he said, his tone shifting. “I’m with the organization your husband was involved with.”
“What do you want?” I managed to stammer, panic bubbling beneath the surface.
“It's not what I want; it’s what he owes us. Where is Andrew?”
Realization crashed over me like a wave. “He never left us,” I gasped, the truth slicing through the haze of confusion. “He was forced to run to protect us.”
The stranger’s eyes turned cold. “You need to tell him to come back. Or we’ll come for you.”
As he stepped back, a chill permeated the air, and my breath hitched. The danger was real, and it was breathing down our necks. Andrew's past was no longer a distant memory; it was the very threat that had come knocking at our door.
