The Officer's Shocking News
“SIR, DO YOU EVEN HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOUR DAUGHTER HAS DONE?” The officer's voice echoed in my mind. I felt paralyzed, staring into his serious eyes. How could he be saying this? What could Ainsley possibly have done?
“What do you mean?” I managed to choke out, but I could hardly hear my own voice over the roaring in my ears.
“Your daughter has been involved in a hit-and-run accident,” the other officer interjected, his tone steady but grave. “A pedestrian is critically injured. We need your help to locate her. She's currently missing.”
My heart dropped. “Missing? No... that can't be right.” Thoughts raced through my mind, images of Ainsley laughing with her friends, her bright smile lighting up every room she entered. This wasn’t the daughter I knew.
The officers exchanged another glance, and I felt something primal stir within me — a mix of panic and dread. “What if...what if she’s hurt? Or worse?” My throat tightened, the weight of those words heavy.
“We don’t know. That’s why we need to find her quickly,” the first officer replied. “Do you have any idea where she might have gone?”
Just then, it hit me. Her friends. She must have been with them. “I need to go to Mia’s house,” I said, urgency fueling my words. “She’ll know where Ainsley is. She has to.”
“We’ll accompany you,” the officer said, but my mind was already racing ahead, desperate for answers.
Desperate for Answers
As I drove towards Mia's house, I felt the knot in my stomach tighten with every passing moment. “Why, Ainsley? Why?” My heartache was palpable, the car’s interior feeling claustrophobic. I pulled into Mia's driveway and rushed to the door.
Mia opened it wide, her eyes widening in shock. “Mr. Smith! What’s wrong?”
“I need to know where Ainsley is!” My voice trembled. “Please, have you seen her?”
Mia hesitated, glancing back as if searching for the right words. “She’s been different lately... really distant,” she finally said. “It’s like she’s not even herself anymore.”
“Different how?” I pressured, each second weighing heavy. “What do you mean?”
“She doesn’t hang out with us like she used to. And when we talk about college and the future, she just shuts down.”
Mia’s mother appeared in the doorway, her expression serious. “Ainsley's been involved with a new boyfriend, you know. I think he might have something to do with this.”
Those words struck me like a punch to the gut. Ainsley and a boyfriend? What did I not know? “Who is he?”
Mia shrugged, looking down. “I don’t know much about him. Just... she hasn’t told us much.”
As I turned to leave, chasing the threads of my swirling thoughts, I caught a whisper behind me. Mia and her mother were speaking in hushed tones, their voices low and urgent. “Do you think he could be behind this?” Mia asked. “Maybe we should tell him everything we know.”
My heart raced. What did they know? I had to find out more.
