The Truth About Goldi
Mrs. Johnson sat across from me, her eyes filled with a heaviness I hadn’t noticed before. “Goldi didn’t leave because she wanted to,” she said quietly, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. “She was scared, John. Overwhelmed.”
My heart raced as I processed her words. “Scared? Of what? She left us.”
“She didn’t think she could handle it,” Mrs. Johnson replied. “All the expectations, the stigma. It was too much, and she felt completely alone.”
“But she could have told me! I would have—” My voice cracked, frustration mixing with a newfound understanding. “I would have helped her.”
“You were too consumed by your anger. You didn’t see her reaching out,” she explained gently. “I witnessed her struggle, John. She thought you’d be better off without her.”
As the weight of her confession settled over me, memories flooded back—the nights filled with silence, the days filled with resentment. I had only ever seen my own pain, never considering hers. Was it too late to mend what had been broken?
Reaching Out
After our conversation, I felt a strange mix of hope and dread. I needed to reach out to Goldi, to find some semblance of closure. I grabbed a pen and paper, my fingers trembling as I wrote. “I want to understand,” I began, the words flowing like a desperate plea.
Despite everything, I longed to know her side of the story. I found her current address online, the words seeming to pulse off the screen. Would she even want to hear from me after all these years?
“I’ll send this,” I promised myself, tucking the letter into an envelope. “I have to try.”
Just as I prepared to seal the envelope, my phone rang. My heart leapt at the sight of Goldi’s name on the screen.
But something was off. Her breath was uneven. “John, I—” she gasped, the panic in her voice slicing through the static. “I need your help. I don’t know what to do...”
“What’s wrong?” I demanded, my pulse quickening in response to her distress.
“I’m—I’m scared!” she stammered, her words tumbling out like stones. “I can’t... I can't breathe...”
“Goldi!” I shouted, but the line suddenly went silent. My heart sank as dread filled the pit of my stomach. “Goldi?”
Then I heard a faint thud, followed by an eerie silence that hung in the air like a thick fog. She had collapsed. Fear clawed at my chest as I fumbled for my keys, racing into an unknown future.
