Jack’s Desperate Hope
“What is it, girl?” Jack asked, wiping the tears from his eyes as Bella growled, her ears perked. The guards chuckled, dismissing her protective instinct. “Just a dog being a dog,” one said, rolling his eyes.
But Jack kept his gaze on the entrance of the yard, straining to see what had caught Bella's attention. A flicker of movement made his heart race.
Then he saw him. Tom. His brother stood at the prison gate, looking worn and defeated, but undeniably present. Jack's breath caught in his throat.
“Tom?” he whispered, the name a plea, a prayer. Could it be? Had Tom finally come to fight for him?
Tom looked back, and in that moment, the world around them faded. The longing to reconnect overwhelmed Jack, flooding him with a familiar warmth. “You’re here,” he murmured, hope igniting within him. “You’re really here.”
A Spark of Truth
Before he could call out, Tom rushed in, breathless and disheveled. “Jack! I’ve got something for you,” he panted, fumbling in his jacket. Jack’s heart thudded. The notebook—had he really brought it?
Tom thrust the small, weathered notebook into Jack's hands. “This… this could change everything,” he urged, their eyes locking with urgency. Jack flipped it open, his pulse quickening as he scanned the pages filled with notes and sketches.
“Is this what I think it is? Evidence?” Jack’s voice was a whisper, thick with disbelief. “You found it?”
“I told you I wouldn’t give up,” Tom insisted, glancing anxiously at the guards. “But we have to act fast. They won’t let you out much longer.”
Time stretched and twisted as Jack tried to absorb the rush of possibilities. His mind raced with thoughts of freedom, the hope of vindication, but an underlying anxiety gnawed at him. What if it was all too late?
Just then, a loud siren blared, echoing across the yard. Fear rippled through the guards, their laughter replaced by urgency. Jack's heart sank. “What’s happening?”
“Lockdown!” one of the guards barked, scrambling for his radio. Panic unfolded, confusion spreading like wildfire among prisoners and staff alike.
Jack's grip on the notebook tightened, the weight of its contents heavier than ever. In his gut, he felt the truth shift—the realization dawning in a chilling wave. The notebook not only held the key to his freedom but also exposed Tom’s betrayal.
