Unexpected News
“She’s been in town,” Mrs. Johnson said, her voice shaky. “Goldi wants to see Leo.”
My heart sank. The last thing I expected was an admission that struck like lightning. “What?” I replied, barely able to process her words. “Why now?”
“She needs to confront her past. She’s... she’s regretting everything,” Mrs. Johnson continued, her eyes filled with concern.
A whirlwind of emotions hit me. Anger surged to the forefront, ready to unleash. How could she just waltz back into our lives after all these years? But then I thought of Leo. Would he want to see her? Would it bring him peace or more confusion?
“I don’t know if I can do this,” I muttered, running a hand through my hair. The thought of Goldi showing up shattered my fragile routine. “What if he doesn’t want to see her?”
“You’re not just considering your feelings,” Mrs. Johnson pressed gently. “Think about Leo. He deserves to know.”
“Deserves?” I scoffed, my voice rising. “What did she ever give him?”
“A chance to heal,” she answered softly, her wisdom cutting through my rage. “Maybe it’s time to let go of your anger.”
As I processed her words, I felt the battle within me intensify. Should I reach out to Goldi, or protect Leo from potential heartache? My mind raced, spinning with thoughts of a mother who left, who may now want to return. Could I really risk it?
Bridging the Gap
The days weighed heavy on my shoulders, but I finally made the call. “Goldi,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. “If you want to meet Leo, it’s now or never.”
“I…I’m ready,” she stammered. I could hear the ache in her voice, the nervousness. “I just want a chance.”
The day came, and tension hung thick in the air. As Leo and I waited, I stole glances at him, noticing his fidgeting hands and anxious gaze. “You okay, buddy?”
“I don’t know, Dad,” he mumbled, the uncertainty evident in his voice. “What if she’s not who I remember?”
“She’s probably not,” I admitted, glancing away. “But it’s your decision to make.”
When Goldi walked in, my heart raced. She hesitated at the door, the weight of her own guilt visible in her posture. Leo glanced up, his eyes wide, a mixture of fear and curiosity on his face.
“Leo,” she breathed, tears welling in her eyes. “I…I can’t believe it’s really you.”
He stepped back, his expression hardening. “Why should I care?”
I could see it then—the reality of her guilt. Every word unspoken between them created a chasm. “I’m so sorry,” she finally murmured, the raw honesty cutting through the air. “I was scared.”
As they started to connect, I felt a wave of something shift, a fragile bridge being formed. But then, without warning, Leo clutched his chest, his eyes wide with terror.
“Dad!” he gasped, collapsing to the ground. Panic surged through me like a wildfire, my heart pounding as I rushed to him, fearing the worst.
