Uncovering Secrets
Determined to expose the truth, I sat hunched over my laptop, fingers racing across the keyboard. I typed in Mark’s ex-friends’ names, searching for connections. My heart pounded as each click brought me closer to the woman in the video.
The phone calls went like this: "Hi, Lisa? Do you remember Mark's friend, Sarah?" The silence on the other end told me everything. "What do you know about her?"
Rumors began to surface. "They were close, you know," one friend admitted hesitantly. "But that was years ago." Each piece of information felt like a heavy stone in my gut. "Close?" I pressed, my voice shaking with anger. "What do you mean?"
Another friend mentioned something about a breakup that had spiraled into chaos. "Mark told me he cut ties for good. She was obsessed." My mind raced. Obsessed? It didn’t sit well, and neither did the thought of a secret relationship shadowing our lives.
As I dug deeper, I uncovered whispered conversations and concealed faces in the photos I had of Mark’s past. Each discovery clawed at my trust, revealing cracks where secrets had festered for too long. I was desperate to confront him, but first, I needed clarity on this woman.
Desperate Answers
I couldn't shake the feeling that Miss Greenwood held answers to my questions, so I returned to the daycare the next day. As I stepped inside, the familiar scent of crayons and disinfectant filled the air, but it felt different now—tainted.
“Miss Greenwood?” I found her in the playroom, her expression heavy. “Can we talk?”
She nodded solemnly, leading me to a quiet corner. “I’ve been meaning to tell you... Ava was excited about someone new.” The worry lines on her face deepened. “She mentioned a new friend just before…” Her voice faltered.
“She was... different that day. Happy but anxious, like she had been told a secret,” Miss Greenwood said, her eyes brimming with tears. “I wish I had noticed sooner.”
As I processed her words, a chilling thought crept into my mind. What kind of influence did this woman have on Ava? Did she really think she could just waltz back into our lives?
Suddenly, my phone vibrated against the table, breaking the tension. I glanced at the screen, my heart stopping as I read the message: “Stop looking into it, or you'll regret it.” A cold sweat broke out over my skin. Panic gripped me.
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed again. Against my better judgment, I picked it up, dread pooling in my stomach. A photo loaded on my screen, of me at the daycare, taken from a distance. My breath hitched as I realized someone was watching me.
