Shattered Memories

Driving away, I felt the weight of my reality press down on me. I had come all this way for nothing. Anger fueled me, but it was a hollow flame in the pit of my stomach. I needed answers, but every lead seemed to tighten the knot in my gut.

Once home, I paced the living room, an uneasy energy thrumming through me. The earrings sparkled on the table, but they felt foreign now. I needed to clear my mind. I grabbed my phone and began searching for any leads on Judith’s estate.

The hours ticked by, each second drawing me closer to the brink of madness. I stumbled upon an old news article mentioning Judith and her secluded life, but there was little else. I remembered the woman from the yard. She might know something.

It was dusk when I picked up my coat and headed back to Ohio. Shadows danced around me as I drove, each mile steeped in uncertainty. The house loomed in the distance like a specter. I had to know. I couldn’t leave this in the dark.

This time, I knocked again, a different resolve in my heart. The same woman answered, her expression a mix of recognition and reluctance.

“I’m not leaving until I get answers,” I said, my voice steady.

“You don’t understand,” she replied, her voice low and serious. “Things are more complicated than you think.”

“Then tell me!”

“Judith had a—” The woman hesitated, glancing over her shoulder. “She had a daughter before Hannah. A daughter she lost as well.”

I felt the world stop as I processed her words. “I don’t understand.”

Suddenly, the woman’s demeanor shifted. “Judith gave up on finding her. She believed she was gone for good.”

“What was her name?” I asked, heart racing. The world felt like it was tilting on its axis.

“Lila. Same age as Hannah. That’s all I know.” Her voice trembled as she spoke, and I felt a rush of emotions I couldn’t contain.

“Lila?” I echoed, a connection snapping into place. “Do you know where she is? Where Judith went?”

“I wish I did.” The woman stepped back, closing the door firmly. “But you need to leave. Now.”

Defeated, I turned to leave, my mind a swirling mess of grief and confusion. Yet one name echoed in my mind. Lila. Could that name be the missing piece to the puzzle? My phone buzzed in my pocket, the screen lighting up — a text from Rick.

“We need to talk. I know more than I’ve told you.”

It felt like a trap, yet I knew I had to respond. “Meet me back at the house.”

The game had changed, and I realized I was not done yet.

A Truth Unraveled

When I got home, Rick was pacing the living room, his expression a mixture of fear and resolve. “You shouldn’t have come back,” he said. “I’ve been thinking.”

“Thinking? You’ve had a decade of lies. What is there to think about now?” I shot back, anger bubbling to the surface. “You’ve painted my daughter’s life with every brushstroke of betrayal.”

“No, please listen,” he begged, kneeling before me. “I didn’t plan any of this. I just wanted to protect her, to protect us.”

“Protect us? You destroyed everything.”

“No! You don’t understand what Judith was involved in!”

“What does that even mean?” I furrowed my brows, my heart racing in fear.

“Judith wasn’t just her guardian. She was involved in…well, you have to understand.” He looked desperate, his gaze pleading.

“Involved in what?” My stomach twisted. All my assumptions were unraveling. Could Judith have been hiding something darker?

“She was part of a group — they believed in alternate realities. That Hannah...” he paused, swallowing hard, “was meant for something greater. They never intended for her to live her life as a regular child.”

“You’re saying she was taken for a reason?” I whispered, feeling as if the floor beneath me was slipping away.

“I found it among Judith’s things, notes, theories, all of it.” He paused, emotions flooding his eyes. “There was a reason I had to take her.”

“What are you saying?”

I took a step
