Unearthed Secrets

Ivy woke with a little yawn, her tiny fingers stretching before grasping at the air. I scooped her up, cradling her against my chest. Eileen’s gaze softened for an instant before hardening again.

“What are you going to do with her?” Eileen asked. The question was loaded. I felt my heart race, the unspoken judgment lacing her tone. It felt like she was asking me to justify my very existence.

I hesitated. “What do you mean?”

“Are you going to keep her away from me? Away from family?”

“She’s my daughter,” I snapped back, the anger spilling over. “I’m trying to raise her, not punish anyone.”

The room fell silent, the weight of our shared history hanging heavily. I studied her face, searching for signs of vulnerability beneath the hardened exterior. Instead, there was only distance.

Then, as if drawn by a magnet, my eyes fell on the envelope—Steve’s last words to me, his love and fears intertwined. I retrieved it from the table, holding it in my trembling hands. “He wanted us to support one another.”

As I read the words aloud, something shifted in Eileen’s expression. It was as if the layers guarding her heart began to crack. But just as quickly, she folded her arms again, retreating behind her wall. “He wanted a lot of things.”

Anger bubbled to the surface again. “You can’t keep blaming me for his absence. I lost him just like you did!”

But something in her gaze caught me off guard. Was that regret? “You don’t know what it’s like,” she whispered. “My only son is gone.”

In that moment, the fight left me. We were both grieving two sides of the same coin, and somehow, we had to find our way through it. But there was one thing I couldn't shake. I couldn’t trust her. Not yet.

As we stood there, the air tightening around us like a noose, I glanced down at Ivy, blissfully unaware of the battle waging between her family.

“I wish things were different,” Eileen said quietly, her voice breaking.

“So do I,” I replied, staring into her eyes, searching for any glimmer of understanding. But the answer eluded us both.

Fragments of Truth

Days turned into weeks, and while Ivy grew, the tension between Eileen and me festered. Each video of Steve was becoming a mixed blessing, a reminder of love but also of the chasm between us. I felt like I was stuck in a tunnel, with no light at the end.

Then I received an unexpected phone call from Eileen. “Can we talk?” she asked, her voice tentative.

My stomach twisted. “About what?”

“About Steve,” she said, hesitation threading through her tone. “I think there’s something you should know.”

As we met at a quiet café, the swirling aroma of coffee enveloped me, but I was only half-present. I waited for the truth to break between us like a wave rising through the air. Eileen looked frail, shadows under her eyes deepening.

“He wanted to reconcile,” she said. “Before he got too sick.”

Those words, uttered softly, cut through me like a dagger. “What do you mean?”

Eileen’s fingers trembled around her cup, her gaze heavy. “He believed it was his fault for pushing you away. He was scared about what would happen after he was gone.”

The room spun slightly as I absorbed her words. “He didn’t trust you with me.” My voice quaked.

“He wanted to, but he was afraid. He talked about you—how strong you were, how lucky he was. He hoped things would change between us. I swear.”

But the more she spoke, the more I felt the ground beneath my feet crumbling. Eileen's eyes glistened, and for a fleeting moment, I glimpsed the mother beneath the haze of anger. But I didn’t want the past to dictate our future anymore. I wanted the truth to emerge without holding back.

“Even with the videos, he never forgot to mention how much he wanted us to work together,” she added quietly. But what did that mean for us? Could we actually find a new way forward? Was it possible?
