Bridging the Divide

After the nurse left, I found myself fixating on Eileen's absence. It felt like a jagged puzzle piece that refused to fit. I couldn’t get a grip on the anger brewing inside me, but it was there, simmering just below the surface.

The first time I’d seen her at the hospital, I had turned away. I had been too raw and too vulnerable. But now, it felt like I had to reach out. I needed to break this cycle of resentment. I couldn’t let Steve’s promise hang in the air like a ghost.

Weeks passed in a blur, the days becoming a routine of diapers, sleepless nights, and videos from Steve. Each one filled with love but layered over with an implied challenge that only deepened my grief. Should I call Eileen? Invite her to see Ivy?

“I’m glad you came,” I said, forcing myself to maintain eye contact. She nodded, but there was no warmth in the gesture.

Ivy lay sleeping in her crib, a peaceful reminder of everything I had lost and gained. With trepidation, I guided Eileen over to the crib. “This is her.”

“She looks like him,” Eileen murmured. The words held the weight of something unresolved.

My breath caught. It was a mix of sorrow and connection that hung in the air between us. Did she see it? Did she see the piece of Steve in his little girl? But the moment was brief, and soon the tension returned, thick and palpable.

The story continues…
