The Day I Discovered My Sister Wasn't Really Dead and My Niece's World Turned Upside Down

New Beginnings

"I made an appointment with a counselor," I told her. "For Ruth. For us. You don't speak to her alone until we have guidance."

"I need you to say something," I told her.

"When Ruth asks why, you don't make me the villain."

A few weeks later, Joan sat on my living room sofa. Ruth sat beside me, close enough that her knee pressed into mine. Andy stayed in the kitchen, close enough for Ruth to know he was there.

"Your aunt didn't keep me from you," she said. "I stayed away because I was hurt and scared, and I made the wrong choice."

Joan shook her head hard. "Never. I was scared I wouldn't be good enough for you."

I leaned toward Ruth. "Grown-ups being scared is never a child's fault."

Ruth nodded, but her eyes stayed on Joan.

Joan's face crumpled, but she answered right.

"No. You don't have to call me anything your heart isn't ready for."

Ruth looked at me. "Can Aunty Jess stay my Aunty-Mom?"

Before I could answer, Joan said, "She earned that name."

Unfolding Patterns

Three months later, Ruth had a school presentation.

I got there early, like always. Andy carried the poster board and a sneaky bar of chocolate for Ruth.

Joan arrived after us and stood near the back.

When Ruth's presentation ended, she scanned the room.

Over Ruth's shoulder, I saw Joan shifting on her feet, her nervous energy palpable.

Ruth's eyes lit when she spotted us and rushed over, her ponytail swinging.

"Did you see me? I said the part about the butterflies!"

I hugged her tightly. "You were amazing, sweetheart. So brave!"

But as she relayed her presentation, I noticed Joan moving closer. Was she waiting for a moment? Was she planning to speak to Ruth again?

As if sensing my thoughts, Ruth turned to Joan, her smile fading slightly.

"Mommy!" she called out, like a question hanging in the air.

Joan froze, then stepped forward. The distance felt precarious, like a tightrope walk.

But then, Ruth's smile returned, and she ran to her. In an instant, they were enveloped in each other's presence.

"You did so well," Joan said, her eyes glistening.

But as I watched, a chill crawled over my skin like ice. Something about this felt too perfect, like a beautiful painting hiding a dark truth behind the canvas.

And just then, a phone vibrated against the wooden pew. A name I didn’t expect lit up the screen. A name I thought I’d left behind with grief.

"What the hell," I whispered, my heart racing.

As I fished my phone from my pocket, I found myself standing on the edge of a cliff. The contents of that message could change everything.
