Teenager Fights to Protect Little Sister from Greedy Aunt's Clutches

Teenager Fights to Protect Little Sister from Greedy Aunt's Clutches

I knocked, forcing a casualness I didn’t feel. Denise’s carefully constructed smile faltered for a fraction of a second before snapping back into place. “Michael! Right on time. Vicky’s just finishing up a snack.” Her eyes flickered to Howard, who stood stiffly behind her, his face a mask of forced pleasantry.

The Weight of Whispered Words

“Just wanted to pick her up,” I said, keeping my voice even. “Flat tire. Had to patch it before heading back.” I gestured vaguely towards the front yard. The lie felt clumsy, but necessary. The raw anger I'd felt crouching beneath the window threatened to consume me. To hear them talk about Vicky like that… like a burden, a stepping stone to financial freedom. It was sickening.

Denise ushered me inside. “She’s in the sunroom, doing a puzzle. Such a clever girl.” The sunroom was immaculate, sterile even. Vicky was seated at a small table, meticulously arranging puzzle pieces. She looked… smaller. Her usual bright energy seemed dimmed.

“Hey, squirt,” I said, kneeling beside her. She looked up, her face lighting up with a genuine smile. “How was your visit?”

“Okay,” she mumbled, then glanced at Denise, who was watching us with hawk-like intensity. “It was fun.”

My gut twisted. Fun wasn’t the word I’d use. The final hearing was tomorrow. If I didn't do something, Vicky would be shipped off to boarding school, and Aunt Denise and Uncle Howard would get their hands on the insurance settlement from the fire. I had to find a way to prove they were only after the money. But how? I needed evidence, something concrete. As we walked to the door, Vicky squeezed my hand, her small fingers digging into my palm. "Michael," she said quietly, "I want to go home."

Back at our small apartment, the silence felt oppressive. I made Vicky hot chocolate and we sat on the sofa, watching a cartoon. It was a pathetic attempt to create normalcy, to shield her from the storm brewing around us. I replayed the conversation I’d overheard in my head, searching for a weakness, a detail I’d missed. Howard’s comment about the money… that was key. But how to prove it?

Unearthing the Past

I remembered Dad mentioning something once, years ago. Something about a financial advisor, a man named Mr. Henderson, who helped my parents manage the insurance policies. Could he have information about the settlement? It was a long shot, but I was desperate.

The next morning, I explained to my boss at the diner that I needed a few hours off. Thankfully, he was understanding. Mr. Henderson’s office was in a towering downtown building, a world away from our quiet neighborhood. The receptionist was polite but unhelpful. “Mr. Henderson retired five years ago,” she said. “He moved to Florida.”

Defeated, I was about to leave when I noticed a dusty file cabinet tucked away in a corner. On a whim, I asked the receptionist if Mr. Henderson had left any records behind. She shrugged and said, “He donated most of his files to the historical society. Said they might be of interest to researchers.”

The historical society was a small, unassuming building filled with the scent of old paper and forgotten stories. After hours of searching through archived documents, I finally found it: a file labeled “The Miller Family – Insurance and Estate Planning.” Inside was a detailed summary of my parents’ policies, and a handwritten note from Mr. Henderson: “Denise and Howard expressed significant interest in the settlement details. Seemed overly concerned with the financial aspect.”
