“Don’t lie to me, Verónica,” Rogelio said, his voice gaining strength. “That’s not just ‘an old picture.’ That’s a picture of you… with a son. A son you never mentioned. A son who looks about Mauricio’s age.” The room erupted in murmurs. My cousins exchanged bewildered glances.
Mauricio looked genuinely shocked, his engagement glow momentarily extinguished. Ximena squeezed his hand, her face etched with concern. I felt a strange mix of vindication and dread. This wasn't about the house anymore. This was about something far bigger, something that had been buried for decades.
“It’s… complicated,” Verónica stammered, avoiding Rogelio’s gaze. “It was a long time ago. It doesn’t matter now.” “Doesn’t matter?” Rogelio practically roared, finally slamming his glass onto the table. “You’ve been living a lie for twenty years, and you tell me it doesn’t matter? You let me believe Mauricio was *our* son, while you had another child all along?” He looked at me, his eyes filled with a pain I hadn’t seen before. “Alma, I… I don’t understand.”
Verónica’s carefully constructed facade was crumbling. She opened her mouth to speak, then closed it again, tears welling up in her eyes. Before she could utter a word, a voice from the doorway startled us all. “Perhaps I can explain.”
Chapter 3: The Unexpected Witness
Standing in the doorway was a man I’d never seen before. He was older, with silver hair and kind eyes, but there was a sadness about him that seemed to weigh him down. He walked slowly into the room, his gaze fixed on Verónica. “Ricardo?” Rogelio asked, his voice laced with confusion. “Do you know this man?” I asked my father, but he didn’t answer. His eyes were glued to the unfolding drama.
“I’m Verónica’s first husband,” the man, Ricardo, said quietly. “And that,” he nodded towards the photograph in Rogelio’s hand, “is my son, Miguel. Mauricio’s half-brother.” A collective gasp rippled through the room. Verónica finally broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. “It was a mistake,” she wailed. “A terrible mistake. I was young, and foolish, and I thought I could leave everything behind.”
Ricardo continued, his voice steady despite the emotional turmoil. “Verónica left Miguel and me when he was just a baby. She said she couldn’t handle motherhood, that she needed to find herself. She disappeared, and I spent years searching for her. I finally gave up, assuming she didn't want to be found.”
He paused, looking directly at Verónica. “Then, a few years ago, I saw a picture of Mauricio in a magazine—a society event. He looked so much like Miguel… I started investigating. And I discovered she’d remarried, started a new life, and pretended Miguel never existed.”
My father was reeling. He sank back into his chair, his face ashen. “You… you deliberately hid your first son from me? You let me love Mauricio as if he were my own, knowing… knowing the truth?” Verónica didn’t answer, only continued to weep.
Mauricio, stunned into silence, stared at his mother with a mixture of disbelief and anger. The wedding plans, the inheritance, the entire foundation of his life suddenly felt… shaky. The air was thick with betrayal and unspoken questions. I glanced at my father, wondering what he would do next.
The truth was finally coming out — and there was no turning back now… (Continue to Part 3 →)
