"It needed to be. My family…they wouldn’t understand." Maren, oblivious to the seismic shift occurring, floated over, her face radiant with bridal bliss. "Ev, you look…different. What happened?" Before I could answer, Victor swooped in, his arm possessively around Maren's waist. "She had a little accident, darling. Clumsy as always."
Julian’s grip tightened on my hand. "An accident? It looked rather deliberate to me." Victor's face flushed. "Mind your own business, sir. We're a private family." Julian’s voice dropped, laced with steel. "I assure you, I'm becoming very much involved."
He turned back to me. "Shall we?" He offered his arm, and I accepted, ignoring the stunned silence that had fallen over the immediate area. As we walked, I caught Maren’s bewildered expression. This wasn’t how things were supposed to be. But then, nothing about tonight was going according to plan. And I had a feeling this was just the beginning.
Chapter 3: The Revelation
Julian steered me away from the throng and toward a quieter alcove overlooking the gardens. “Three years,” he said quietly, his gaze searching mine. “That’s how long you’ve been keeping this a secret?” I nodded, my throat tight. “I was afraid of what they’d do. What they’d say.” I explained how I’d met Julian during a business trip to Florence. It had been a whirlwind romance, conducted in stolen moments and hushed phone calls.
He’d offered me a life my family had always implied I didn’t deserve. But revealing him, challenging their carefully constructed narrative…it felt impossible. “They’ve always defined me by my relationship to Maren. By what I *lack*. A husband, a career they approve of…everything.” Julian listened intently, his expression a mixture of anger and concern. “And they knew about me, at least peripherally?”
“They knew I was…seeing someone. I deliberately kept details vague. Victor made it clear he disapproved, dismissing you as ‘another European artist type.’ He wanted me to marry someone…suitable. Someone who would reflect well on the family.” Suddenly, a figure loomed over us. It was Aunt Clara, Maren’s mother, her face etched with disapproval. “Evelyn, darling, what is going on? And who is this…gentleman?” Before I could respond, Clara’s eyes landed on Julian’s hand resting on my arm. “Is that…a Vance ring?
Julian Vance? The Julian Vance?” My heart plummeted. Clara knew. She knew everything. “You’ve been corresponding with him all this time? Behind our backs?” She turned to Julian, her voice dripping with venom. "You're the one who's been filling her head with nonsense, aren't you?"
Julian’s jaw tightened. “I’m the one who recognizes a woman of intelligence and spirit. Something your family seems incapable of doing.” Clara gasped. “How dare you! Get away from my niece!” But before the situation could escalate, a hushed murmur swept through the ballroom. All heads turned towards the entrance, where a woman in a striking red dress had just appeared. And she was heading straight for us.
Chapter 4: The Witness
The woman in red was Eleanor Hayes, a prominent investigative journalist known for her fearless reporting and uncanny ability to uncover hidden truths. She was also, unbeknownst to my family, my closest friend from college. I’d confided in Eleanor about everything – my family’s treatment of me, my relationship with Julian, and the constant feeling of being overshadowed by Maren. Eleanor’s arrival was no coincidence.
The truth was finally coming out — and there was no turning back now… (Continue to Part 3 →)
