The letter continued, revealing a network of shell corporations, offshore accounts, and illicit dealings orchestrated by Julian. My brother. The man I had always trusted. A wave of nausea washed over me. But there was more. A postscript, scrawled in a hurried hand: “The boys…they’re not just your sons, Grant. Their father isn’t who you think it is.”
Just as I finished reading, my phone rang. It was Julian. “Where are you, Grant?” his voice was clipped, devoid of any warmth. “Mother and I are at the hospital. We need to discuss things.”
“Discuss what, Julian?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm. “The fact that you fabricated evidence to destroy my marriage and steal a fortune? The fact that you framed Mara?”
Silence. Then, a cold laugh. “You always were naive, Grant. Mara was a threat. A gold digger. She was after the Waverly name, the Waverly money. I simply protected the family.”
The Shadow of a Father
“Protected the family by destroying an innocent woman and denying me my children?” I retorted, my grip tightening on the phone. “And what about the postscript, Julian? What about the claim that the boys aren’t entirely mine?”
Julian’s voice dropped, becoming a low, menacing growl. “That’s…complicated. Let’s just say Mara had a…friend. A colleague from her law firm. A man with certain…ambitions. It doesn’t matter. They’re still Waverlys. And I will ensure they are raised to uphold the family name.” He paused. “Come to the hospital, Grant. We need to talk. And bring that key. It’s evidence. Evidence that needs to be…secured.”
I hung up, my blood boiling. Mara hadn’t just been protecting my grandfather’s legacy; she had been protecting me, and my sons. But from whom? And who was the other father? I raced back to St. Catherine’s, the brass key burning a hole in my pocket. As I pulled into the hospital parking lot, I saw my mother and Julian standing near the entrance, their faces grim. My mother’s eyes met mine, and for the first time, I saw not love, but calculation. They knew.
I entered the hospital, bracing myself for a confrontation. June Harper intercepted me, her expression grave. “They’re in the family waiting room,” she whispered. “And they’ve already started going through Mara’s things.” She hesitated, then added, “There’s someone else here. A man…he arrived shortly after you left the bank. He’s been asking about the boys.”
“A man?” I asked, my heart pounding. “What does he look like?”
“Tall. Dark hair. Very…intense. He wouldn’t tell me his name, but he kept asking about the paternity of the twins.” June’s eyes widened slightly. "He mentioned a case he’d worked on with Mara, years ago. Something about a pro-bono environmental case in the Amazon.”
The Amazon Connection
The waiting room was a scene of controlled chaos. My mother was directing hospital staff, meticulously examining Mara’s medical records. Julian was on the phone, barking orders to his lawyers. And seated in a corner, radiating an unsettling calm, was a man I’d never seen before. He was everything June had described: tall, dark-haired, with eyes that seemed to pierce through me. As I approached, he stood, extending a hand. “Grant Waverly,” he said, his voice a smooth baritone. “I’m Rafael Vargas.”
The truth was finally coming out — and there was no turning back now… (Continue to Part 3 →)
