Seeing the Man Who Chose Money Over Us Again Made Me Question Everything I Thought I Had Left Behind

Seeing the Man Who Chose Money Over Us Again Made Me Question Everything I Thought I Had Left Behind Save

Section 3

Damien leaned against the counter of the clinic's reception area, anxiety gnawing at his insides. He could still see the boys’ faces, so much like his own, and he needed to know everything he could about Mara's experience.

"Can I help you?" a nurse asked, her voice gentle yet professional.

He cleared his throat, trying to mask the turmoil beneath. "I’m looking for information about Mara Bennett. I heard she... had some complications during her pregnancy." The words felt heavy on his tongue.

“She did, indeed. It was a tough journey,” the nurse replied, her expression shifting to one of sympathy.

Damien felt a knot tighten in his stomach. “What happened?”

“She was in and out of here for several weeks. There were concerns about both boys, especially during delivery. We were all worried,” she explained, her brow furrowing. “It was a real battle for her.”

The weight of her words crashed into him, pushing him deeper into regret. “Why didn’t I know?”

“Mara didn’t want anyone to know. She was trying to protect you, I think.”

“Protect me?” Damien scoffed, the bitterness in his voice surprising him. “I walked away.”

“Sometimes love can look like walking away, even when it’s the hardest thing to do,” the nurse said softly. “You should talk to her.”

He nodded, the gravity of the situation settling in. There was no turning back now.

Section 4

Mara stood in the kitchen, the smell of macaroni and cheese filling the air as Noah and Ethan argued playfully over who would get the most cheese. She forced a smile, trying to push down the storm of emotions swirling since their encounter with Damien.

“Mom, why doesn’t Daddy ever visit?” Ethan’s innocent question struck her like a thunderbolt. She hesitated, glancing at them, and her heart twinged at the confusion in their eyes.

“He’s busy, sweetie. You know that.”

Noah frowned. “But he was at the mall! He saw us!”

The memory was fresh and painful. At that moment, there was no easy answer. “Some things… some people are complicated.”

As she wiped down the counter, her phone buzzed. The name flashing on the screen made her pulse race. It was Damien again, but she ignored it. She couldn’t face him now. She just couldn’t.

Then the doorbell rang, slicing through her thoughts. She opened the door, and there stood Damien, looking uncertain yet persistent.

“Mara, can we talk?” he asked, his voice trembling slightly.

Her heart raced with anger and a flicker of longing. “Talk? After five years of silence?”

“I need to explain!” His eyes were pleading.

“Explain what? How you walked away? How you pretend we didn’t exist?”

Just as she began to lower her guard, her phone buzzed violently again. She glanced down, heart sinking: a text from Eleanor.

“We’ve been keeping tabs on you, Mara. We know what’s been happening with Damien and the boys.”

A chill crept through her veins, leaving her feeling trapped as she stared into Damien’s eyes, the weight of the past crashing in once more.
