The Truth that Lingers

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as I led my team through Sophie’s chart. “She has a suspected genetic condition,” I stated, keeping my tone clinical. “We need to run additional tests to confirm.”

“What are the odds?” Dr. Harris asked, glancing at me over his glasses.

“It depends, but—” I paused, sensing a familiar presence in the doorway. My heart sank. Elias was there, ears attuned to every word.

“Adelaide, is there something you're not telling us?”

I shot him a quick look, but his expression was unreadable. “No, I’m being straightforward. We just need to be cautious.”

“I hope you’re right about that,” he said, voice laced with concern.

As my colleagues continued discussing potential treatment plans, I could feel Elias’s eyes boring into my back. I wanted to scream for him to leave, to stop hovering like a storm cloud. A wave of anxiety crashed over me.

“If Sophie needs help, I need to know everything.”

His words cut through my composure, and I turned to face him fully. “I’m doing everything I can. You have to trust me.”

“Trust you?” His voice rose, filled with frustration. “You disappeared without a word. And now?”

I stepped closer, my own anger igniting. “This isn’t about us. It’s about Sophie!”

“It always comes back to that, doesn’t it? Her health, her future—what about us?”

The air crackled with unresolved tension, our emotions spiraling out of control. I felt raw, exposed. “We need to focus. For her.”

“Right. Because that’s how you cope. Pretend everything’s fine.”

“No!” I shouted, startling the team. “I’m trying to protect her. And you!”

Just then, a nurse walked in, breaking the moment. “Dr. Brooks, we need to discuss Sophie’s follow-up.”

I glanced at Elias, who stood stiffly, eyes narrowed in frustration. But I could see the worry hidden beneath the surface—his daughter’s wellbeing gnawing at him, and at me too.

Hopes Dashed

Later, the waiting room buzzed with anxious energy. I paced the small break room, heavy thoughts swirling around. What did this mean for us? For Sophie?

Just then, I overheard Elias’s laughter mingling with Sophie’s soft giggles. I peeked out, my heart fluttering. She was smiling, unbothered by the weight of our situation.

“Can I live with both of you?” she asked, her innocent eyes darting between us.

The question hit me like a punch to the gut. I froze. Neither Elias nor I had considered what our decisions meant for her future. “Sophie, that—”

But I couldn’t finish my thought, the implication suffocating me. Elias stepped a little closer to me, reaching for my hand. “I don’t think—”

I pulled away, heart racing. Every instinct screamed that this path was dangerous, like falling back into old patterns. “We can't,” I whispered.

“Adelaide, we—”

Before he could finish, my phone rang, cutting through the tension. I answered it, dread pooling in my stomach. “Hello?”

The voice on the other end delivered the kind of news that made my world tilt. “Dr. Brooks, we have the results. We need to talk about Sophie’s test.”

My breath hitched, the weight of the call crashing down around us. Everything hung in the balance.
