Returning Home Early, A Husband Discovers a Heartbreaking Reality After His Wife’s Surgery

Returning Home Early, A Husband Discovers a Heartbreaking Reality After His Wife’s Surgery
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

Claire flinched. “I tried to stop them, Ethan, I swear. But your mother… she was adamant. She said you work so hard, you deserve to come home to a relaxed family. She said this was the only way.” He turned back to Claire, his heart aching for her, but a seed of doubt had already begun to sprout. “Relaxed? Is that what this is? Leaving a new mother, fresh from a C-section, alone with an eleven-day-old baby? Eating dry noodles?” He noticed Lily stirring in her bassinet, a small whimper escaping her lips. He rushed to her side, gently lifting her into his arms. He felt a surge of protective anger, a fierce determination to understand what had happened. "Tell me everything," he demanded, his voice low and dangerous. "Everything Diane said. Everything Brooke said. Don’t leave anything out.”

A Hidden Debt

Claire began to recount the events of the past week, her voice shaky and fragmented. It started subtly, she explained, with Diane hinting at financial difficulties. Not a crisis, she’d said, just a “tight spot.” Then came the casual mentions of a gambling debt her husband, Robert, had accumulated before he died five years ago. A debt Diane had been secretly managing, making small payments whenever possible. “She said Robert always dreamed of taking her and Brooke to Cancún,” Claire confessed, tears streaming down her face. “She said this was her way of fulfilling his wish, and she knew you wouldn’t want to spoil it for her.” Apparently, the small payments had stopped, and the creditors were becoming more aggressive. Diane had seen Ethan’s transfer as a lifeline, an opportunity to erase the debt and finally free herself from the burden of Robert’s past. Brooke, eager for a vacation and oblivious to the severity of the situation, had readily agreed.

Jason, always eager to please Brooke, had volunteered to drive them to the airport. Ethan listened in stunned silence, the pieces of the puzzle slowly falling into place. His mother, the woman he’d always trusted implicitly, had essentially stolen from her own granddaughter to pay off a gambling debt. He walked to his home office, sat down at his computer, and started searching online. A few clicks and he found the name of Robert’s known creditor. A private loan shark operating out of Chicago. He found a forum where people were complaining about relentless harassment and exorbitant interest rates. Then, he found a post detailing a similar situation: a family drained of their savings, a mother desperate to protect her daughter, and a loan shark who wouldn’t hesitate to ruin lives. He discovered the debt was not merely a ‘tight spot’ but $40,000.

The Loan Shark's Call

Ethan’s phone rang, startling him. It was an unfamiliar number. He answered cautiously. A gravelly voice on the other end identified himself as “Mr. Sal Demarco.” Ethan immediately knew who it was. “Mr. Miller,” Demarco said, his voice dripping with menace. “I understand your mother recently made a rather substantial payment towards her… outstanding obligation. A very generous young man, you are.” Ethan clenched his jaw. “My mother stole money from her granddaughter to pay you,” he said, his voice dangerously low. “That’s what happened.” Demarco chuckled. “Stole? Let’s call it a… strategic reallocation of funds. Your mother is a resourceful woman. She understands the importance of fulfilling commitments.” “You knew about the baby,” Ethan accused. “You knew she was recovering from surgery.” “I simply provide a service,” Demarco replied smoothly. “Your mother came to me.
