The air thickened with tension, palpable—almost tangible—as we rifled through the past, unearthing subjects we hadn’t dared to discuss. The laughter faded, replaced by an uncomfortable silence that pressed down like a heavy fog.

She scowled, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the fabric of the couch, her disdain palpable. “Best for them? Or best for you? You’re flaunting it, Mary. Flaunting what you used to be.”

“It’s not about age. It’s about love,” I replied, trying to keep the tremor out of my voice, my heart racing.

“There’s no love in that body, and you’re teaching them it’s normal.”

My chest tightened, a vise grip of disbelief. Did she really believe that? I could almost hear the gears grinding in her mind—a whirlwind of insecurity and fear. “You’re missing the point. It’s about embracing who we are.”

Having said it, something cracked in me, a fissure forming in the resolve I had built. “You have every right to be afraid of change. I get it. I do.”

A Moment of Clarity

But the quiet that followed was thick with unspoken fears, the air heavy with the weight of our shared history. I realized that underneath Brittany’s anger lay something far deeper—a sadness, a longing buried beneath layers of denial. It was a bitter pill, one both of us were struggling to swallow.

As I spoke, I wondered if allowing my heart to stay open would bring us closer or push us apart. But before she could respond, the phone buzzed again, this time with an incoming call from Edward. I held my breath, the stakes suddenly feeling higher than they had all evening.
