Pregnant Woman Forced to Sleep in Car by Husband, Until His Mom Intervenes

Pregnant Woman Forced to Sleep in Car by Husband, Until His Mom Intervenes
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 2

“Oh, yes, dear,” Mrs. Gable said, a knowing look in her eyes. “Mr. Harding asked me to hold it. Said he’d pick it up when he came to ‘visit’.”

“Has he… visited?” I asked hesitantly.

“Not yet. But he’s been calling, asking about you. Mostly, though, he’s been asking about the bills.”

“Bills?”

“Yes, dear. Seems he’s fallen quite behind on… well, everything. Credit cards, the apartment rent, even the car payments.” Mrs. Gable paused, lowering her voice. “Word around town is he’s been gambling. Heavily.”

Suddenly, Corbin’s behavior made terrifying sense. The sleep deprivation wasn’t just about my pregnancy; it was about the mounting pressure of his secret life spiraling out of control. And now, I was the one paying the price. But why hadn’t he told me? Why had he chosen to punish me for his mistakes?

A Confrontation Years in the Making

Eleanor confirmed Mrs. Gable’s suspicions. Corbin was deeply in debt, having racked up gambling losses over the past year. She’d suspected something was amiss, but he’d always been adept at hiding his problems. She’d been quietly covering his tracks, paying off some debts to prevent foreclosure on the apartment, but she couldn’t keep bailing him out forever.

“He’s always been reckless, even as a child,” Eleanor confessed, her voice laced with sadness. “But I always thought he’d grow out of it. I indulged him too much, perhaps. Tried to shield him from the consequences of his actions.”

“So, making me sleep in the car… it wasn’t just about the sleep?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“No, dear. It was about control. About deflecting blame. He knew you were vulnerable, and he took advantage of that. He needed to feel like he was in charge, even if it meant being cruel.”

Eleanor had arranged a meeting. Corbin was waiting for us in the sunroom, his face pale and drawn. He looked smaller, defeated.

“What’s going on?” he demanded, his voice tight with anxiety. “Why won’t you tell me where she is?”

Eleanor fixed him with a steely gaze. “You know exactly why, Corbin. You abandoned your wife when she needed you most. You treated her with contempt and disrespect. And you lied to us both.” She took a deep breath. “We’ve been paying your debts, Corbin. But no more. You need to face the consequences of your actions.”

Corbin’s face crumpled. “I… I can fix this. I just need some time.”

“Time is what you wasted, Corbin,” Eleanor retorted. “Time you should have spent being a husband and a father.”

The Price of Redemption

Corbin, stripped of his arrogance and facing financial ruin, finally broke down. He confessed everything – the gambling, the lies, the desperate attempts to hide his failures. He hadn’t wanted to burden me, he claimed, but his pride prevented him from asking for help.

Eleanor, though heartbroken, insisted on a condition. Corbin was to enter a debt counseling program and attend regular therapy sessions. He would work two jobs to pay off his debts and contribute to the baby’s expenses. And he would earn back my trust, if that was even possible.

I watched him, my belly swollen with our child, and felt a flicker of something I hadn’t felt in months – a glimmer of hope. But it was a fragile hope, tempered by the pain he’d caused.

Weeks later, our daughter, Lily, was born. A tiny, perfect being who filled our lives with a love I hadn’t known existed. Corbin was a changed man. He held Lily with a tenderness I’d never seen before, tears streaming down his face. He was working tirelessly, attending therapy, and slowly rebuilding our fractured relationship.

One evening, as we sat in our new, slightly larger apartment (a direct result of Corbin’s relentless work ethic), he looked at me, his eyes filled with remorse. “I don’t deserve your forgiveness,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “But I promise to spend the rest of my life trying to earn it.”

I reached for his hand, Lily sleeping peacefully in my arms. “It won’t be easy,” I replied, “but we can start with honesty. And with love.” Eleanor, watching from across the room, smiled. The harsh lesson she’d taught her son had finally taken root. Sometimes, the greatest gifts come wrapped in the most unexpected packages, and sometimes, the deepest wounds lead to the most profound healing.

The car, once a symbol of my isolation, now served as a reminder—a stark testament to a darkness overcome, and a future built on the foundation of remorse, redemption, and unconditional love.
