Shocked by the News

Ten minutes felt like an eternity. The waiting area buzzed around me, but I was only focused on the closed door. My stomach twisted tightly as I glanced down the hallway, anticipating Aaron's return.

When the door finally swung open, Aaron emerged. His face was pale, his eyes glassy as if they had just witnessed a horror I couldn’t imagine. He didn’t meet my gaze, choosing instead to fixate on the floor as he walked past me, his silence louder than any words could be.

“Aaron!” I called, but he didn’t respond. I turned to Sarah, who stood with her arms wrapped around herself, her expression unreadable. “What happened?”

Before I could even register her response, she whispered, “Lily has only a few weeks left.” The weight of her words hit me like a freight train, a crushing realization that shattered any remaining hope.

As I absorbed this devastating news, my heart ached for my son. He was only seventeen, and now he was facing a nightmare that no one should ever have to endure. I wanted to comfort him, to shield him from this pain, but I couldn’t even find the words.

The Last Wish

Gathering the courage, I watched as Aaron took a deep breath and, with renewed determination, re-entered Lily’s room. I followed closely, heart pounding in my chest. The moment I stepped in, I overheard Aaron’s voice, steady yet laced with uncertainty. “What are your last wishes, Lily?”

Lily’s eyes widened, a mixture of fear and longing reflecting back at him. “Promise me you won’t give up on me,” she insisted, her voice trembling as if it was a fragile thread holding them together.

“I promise.” The sincerity in Aaron’s voice made my heart swell, but the heaviness in the air crackled with desperation.

Then, without warning, Aaron turned and bolted out of the room. I rushed after him, adrenaline coursing through my veins. As I rounded the corner, I found him engaged in a heated argument with a nurse just outside the waiting area.

“She deserves better treatment! You can’t just stand by!” Aaron shouted, his fists clenched at his sides.

“We’re doing everything we can!” the nurse responded, her voice strained.

But something in her tone, the slight quiver, made me uneasy. Just then, I caught a glimpse of the doctor approaching, his brow furrowed as he whispered to another staff member. My heart raced as I overheard snatches of their conversation, hints of practices that raised alarms.

“We need to address these concerns before it’s too late…” the doctor murmured, his words chilling me to the bone. This wasn’t just about Lily anymore; something darker loomed over not just her, but every patient in this hospital.

The story continues…
