My Mother’s Lies Cost Me My Freedom, But the Truth is Just Minutes Away

My Mother’s Lies Cost Me My Freedom, But the Truth is Just Minutes Away Save

Desperate to find evidence

As I rushed into my father's old office, the familiar scent of old wood and dust enveloped me. My heart pounded in my chest, each beat urging me to find something—anything—that could turn the tide of this nightmare.

Shoving aside the clutter, I focused on the worn desk in the corner. My hands trembled as I opened the drawer, revealing stacks of papers and envelopes, yellowed with time.

And then I saw it—the glint of something tucked away in the back. My fingers fished out a faded envelope addressed to me. Trembling, I ripped it open, my breath catching in my throat.

“I have my doubts about Curtis. You are the one who served honorably. Do not let anyone convince you otherwise.”

My father's words clawed their way into my heart, injecting a burst of hope I had thought lost. He believed in me. I scanned the papers around me, discovering military records documenting every deployment, every award. This was my proof.

But just as I started to feel that glimmer of hope solidifying into something real, I heard footsteps echoing down the hallway.

“No, no, no,” I whispered, quickly shoving everything back into the drawer, my pulse racing. I ducked behind the desk just as the door creaked open.

Narrowly escaping

The shadowy figure stepped inside, and my heart sank. It was Curtis, a sly grin curling on his lips. I held my breath, praying he wouldn’t find me.

“What would Dad think of you now?” he called out, his voice dripping with disdain as he rifled through the papers. “Pretending to be something you’re not.”

I waited, steeling myself against the rising tide of anger swelling in my chest. Once he left, I’d need to contact the witness who could help me. I scrambled for my phone, but as I slipped out from my hiding place, a thought stabbed through the haze of panic: what if Curtis knew? What if he’d already threatened them?

With renewed urgency, I raced to a payphone outside the diner, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. I quickly dialed the witness’s number, sweat dripping down my brow as I paced back and forth.

When the line finally clicked, I barely got my words out. “I need your help. It’s about the trial—”

“I can’t, they threatened me, not just you. You don’t understand.”

“What do you mean?” I pressed, panic clawing at my throat. “Who threatened you?”

But my ally hesitated, the line growing heavy with dread. I could almost hear their heart race, and then, just like that, they hung up. My heart dropped.

“No, no!” I gasped, spinning on my heel as I headed back to my car. I needed to regroup, reconnect, find another way. But when I reached my vehicle, horror washed over me. My phone was gone—stolen from the front seat. The last means of contacting my ally had vanished.
