My Husband's Passport 'Forgetfulness' Led to a Shocking Discovery at Home

My Husband's Passport 'Forgetfulness' Led to a Shocking Discovery at Home

My husband said he'd forgotten his passport at home while we were at the airport, so I sent my mom to our house to get it — minutes later, she called and whispered, "Honey, he set you up! Come home now!"

Chapter 1: A Passport and a Whisper

"Babe, don't freak out, but I think I left my passport at home."

I stared at my husband, Dereck.

"What? You're joking, right?"

"I wish I was. I've checked my bag three times."

We were at the airport, getting ready for our anniversary trip. We'd been planning this vacation for months, and I couldn't believe Dereck had forgotten the one thing he absolutely needed.

"Okay, where did you last see it?"

"Probably in our bedroom."

He suddenly went quiet, looking like he regretted saying that.

"Actually, you know what? I'll just drive back and get it myself."

"Dereck, there's no way you'll make it back in time. I'll call Mom. She lives ten minutes from our house."

"No, babe, seriously. I can handle it."

I frowned.

"Why are you acting so weird? It's just a passport!"

He hesitated before finally shrugging.

"Fine. Whatever you think is best."

I called Mom and asked her to check Dereck's bedside drawer and bring his passport to the airport. But the entire time I was on the phone, Dereck kept shifting beside me, looking more uncomfortable by the second.

"What is going on with you?" I asked after hanging up.

"Nothing. I'm just stressed about the flight."

About twenty minutes later, my phone rang.

"Mom! Did you find it?"

"Honey, where's Dereck right now?"

"He's sitting right next to me. Why?"

"Can he hear me?"

I glanced at him.

He was watching me now instead of looking at his phone.

"No. Mom, what's wrong?"

"Listen carefully. Don't let him know what I'm about to tell you."

My stomach twisted.

"Mom, you're scaring me."

Chapter 2: The Whispered Warning

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Honey, he set you up! Come home now!"

"What?! What are you talking about?"

"Please, sweetheart. Just trust me. Don't get on that plane!"

I was about to ask what she'd found when Dereck suddenly reached for my hand.

"Everything okay, babe? Did she find my passport?"

I forced a smile, but before I could answer, Mom whispered,

"Honey, hang up right now. And whatever you do, don't let him see what I'm about to send you."

A second later, a photo appeared on my phone. I opened it and froze. The photo showed Dereck's passport, but it wasn't the only thing in the drawer. There were also plane tickets, a hotel reservation, and a letter addressed to me.

"Dereck, what is this?" I asked, my voice trembling.

He looked at me, his eyes wide with panic.

"It's not what it looks like, I swear."

I felt a wave of nausea. What had he been planning?

"Mom, I need to go," I whispered into the phone.

"Honey, be careful. I'm on my way to the airport."
