My Grandpa's Last Gift Helped Me Find My Voice on the Night I Thought I'd Never Return
Unraveling Threads
As the night wore on, I found myself slipping into the music, letting the beat draw me back into the moment. I danced, twirling around and letting the fabric of the dress swirl around me, feeling liberated for the first time that night.
But with every laugh and song, there was still a weight at the back of my mind. Did I even belong here? Was this what Grandpa wanted? I could almost hear his voice, urging me to enjoy life, to find joy in the little moments. It was strange how I could feel his presence alongside me.
“What a great night!” I heard Glenn say, his voice barely audible over the music.
“Yeah,” I replied, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach my eyes. “I guess.”
“Tina, you’re doing amazing,” he insisted, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder. I could feel its warmth seep into my skin, igniting something deep within me.
But just as I was starting to believe it, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a message lighting up my screen. Whoever it was, I didn’t recognize the number. My heart dropped as I clicked it open.
“You don’t know what you’re missing. The truth is coming, and it’s going to shake your world.”
The words settled like lead in my stomach. I looked up at Glenn, who had just finished a conversation with a couple of his friends. Confusion flickered across his features as I showed him the message.
“Who is this?” he asked, his brow furrowing. “You know them?”
I shook my head, my heart racing at the implications. I didn’t know who could be reaching out to me like this, and my gut twisted with unease.
“Maybe it’s a prank?” Glenn suggested, but his voice carried that note of concern. I glanced back at the dance floor, where swirling colors and laughter still filled the air, but all I felt was dread.
“I don’t think so,” I said, my voice trembling. “It feels... personal.”
“Do you want me to stay with you?” he asked. “We can figure it out together.”
“I don’t know,” I replied, the uncertainty swirling within me like the dress’s soft fabric. “But I have to find out who this is.”
“Okay, then,” he nodded, expression serious. “Whatever happens, I’m here.”
As I scrolled through the messages, trying to make sense of it all, the night started to feel heavy again. Maybe I shouldn’t have come at all.
Then, abruptly, my phone buzzed again. Another message from the same number. I clicked it open and read the words that shattered my already tenuous calm.
“You should know the truth about your grandpa.”
This time, the room spun. My stomach twisted into knots, and I felt the room closing in. “What do you mean?” I whispered, almost to myself. I was terrified of what it could mean, the shadows dancing just beyond my reach.
Glenn narrowed his eyes. “Tina, are you okay?”
“No! I need to go,” I replied, my feet already moving toward the exit, the weight of the dress dragging behind me. I had to find out who was sending these messages, who they thought they were to talk about my grandpa like that.
The lights seemed to blur around me, the sound of laughter fading as I slipped back through the throng. “Wait!” I heard Glenn call after me, but I couldn’t stop. I needed answers. I had to find my voice, or this night might swallow me whole.
