My First Date Turned Sour When She Ordered a $150 Lobster and Refused to Pay

My First Date Turned Sour When She Ordered a $150 Lobster and Refused to Pay

Chapter 4: The Old Photograph

Driven by a growing unease, I revisited Bethany’s social media, scrutinizing every post, every comment. That's when I found it – a faded photograph tucked away in her “family memories” album. It showed a young Bethany, maybe five or six years old, standing next to a man who wasn’t her father. The man was… my father.

My father, who had passed away ten years ago. A wave of nausea washed over me. My father had been a successful architect, known for designing some of the city’s most iconic buildings. He’d worked with Harold Sterling on several projects, a collaboration that had apparently extended beyond the professional realm.

I remembered snippets of conversations I’d overheard as a child, hushed tones and veiled references to a “friend” of my father’s, a woman named Eleanor. My mother had always dismissed it as harmless gossip, but now… now it all clicked into place. Eleanor was Bethany’s grandmother. Bethany wasn’t just testing me; she was investigating me.

She’d deliberately sought me out, drawn to a connection she’d only just discovered. The "split the bill" pretense, the lobster, the entire evening… it was all a calculated move, a way to size me up, to see how I would react. I felt a surge of anger, but it was mixed with a profound sense of betrayal.

My father had kept a secret, a secret that had now resurfaced in the most unexpected and unsettling way. I called Mark, my voice trembling. “You won’t believe this,” I said, and began to tell him everything. He was speechless. “This is… insane,” he finally managed to say. “So, she wasn’t just being a spoiled brat. She was trying to figure out if you were… her half-brother?” The thought hadn’t even occurred to me, but it was horrifyingly logical. I had to confront her. I had to know the truth.

Chapter 5: The Revelation

I arranged to meet Bethany at a neutral location – a quiet coffee shop miles away from her opulent world. She arrived precisely on time, looking impeccably dressed, but her usual confidence seemed… brittle. “So,” I said, cutting straight to the chase. “I did some digging. I know about your grandfather, and my father.” Her carefully constructed facade crumbled. She stared at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and… relief?

“You know?” she whispered. “I… I wasn’t sure how much you’d find out.” I continued, “You deliberately matched with me on Tinder, didn’t you? You wanted to see if I was… who I was.” She nodded slowly. “My grandmother told me about him, about their… affair. She showed me a photograph, a young man with kind eyes. She said he was the only man she ever truly loved.”

“And you thought… what? That we had some kind of claim on each other?” I asked, my voice laced with bitterness. “I don't know what I thought!” she exclaimed, her voice rising. “I just… I needed to meet you. I needed to see if it was true. If there was something… more.”

Suddenly, a woman approached our table. It was Eleanor, Bethany’s grandmother. She’d been following us. “Bethany,” she said softly, “it’s time to go.” Bethany turned to her, tears welling up in her eyes. Eleanor glanced at me, a flicker of sadness in her gaze. “I’m sorry, David,” she said.

“This was never meant to hurt anyone.” As they walked away, I noticed a small, worn envelope slipped onto the table. Inside was an old black and white photograph – my father and Eleanor, laughing, arms intertwined. On the back, a handwritten note: “A love we could never have.” The busboy, the lobster, the refusal to pay… it hadn’t been about power or control, but about a decades-old secret, a desperate attempt to connect with a past that could never be fully reclaimed. Karma hadn’t struck Bethany with a mess of food; it had revealed a truth that shattered two families, and finally, set a long-held secret free.
