My Fiancé Was Declared Dead Before Our Wedding, But I Saw Him Alive at Another Wedding

My Fiancé Was Declared Dead Before Our Wedding, But I Saw Him Alive at Another Wedding
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

I cried until I could barely breathe, until my head throbbed and my eyes were swollen. Then, looking at my reflection in the mirror, I wiped my face, took a shaky breath, and picked up my florist badge. Because I suddenly knew exactly what I was going to do. But what? Confront them? Call the police? How could I possibly begin to unravel this deception? A small, determined spark ignited within me. This wasn’t about flowers anymore. This was about betrayal, and lies, and a life stolen from me. And I wasn't going to let it stand.

Whispers of a Past Life

I spent the next hour working mechanically, arranging bouquets and centerpieces, my mind racing. Every smile, every shared glance between Colleen and Adrian, felt like a personal insult. I needed answers, but I couldn’t just burst in and accuse them. I needed to understand why. I overheard snippets of conversation. The groom, “Daniel,” was a successful real estate developer. He’d moved to town six months ago, a fresh start after…a difficult divorce? Colleen’s evasiveness when questioned by the wedding coordinator only deepened my suspicion. “He prefers to keep his personal life private,” she’d said, her voice tight.

During a break, I subtly questioned a caterer who’d worked at previous events at Blackwood Estate. “Oh, Daniel’s a lovely man,” she said, “but…quiet. Keeps to himself. And his mother is very protective. She’s been handling all the arrangements. Heard he changed his name recently. Something about wanting a clean slate.” A name change. That felt significant. I remembered Adrian mentioning a distant uncle, a black sheep of the family, who’d gotten into trouble years ago. He’d changed his name and disappeared. Could there be a connection?

As the ceremony approached, the tension grew. I saw Adrian – Daniel – pacing nervously in the groom’s suite, Colleen hovering over him. I couldn’t stand it anymore. I had to confront her. I found her in the garden, seemingly calm as she inspected the floral archway. “Colleen,” I said, my voice trembling but firm. “We need to talk.” She froze, her face paling. “Meredith, please…not now.” “Yes, now. I saw him. I saw Adrian. Why? Why did you let me believe he was dead?” Her eyes filled with tears, and she finally broke, whispering, "It wasn't supposed to be like this..."

The Weight of Debt and Secrets

Colleen led me to a secluded gazebo, her hands shaking. "It's…complicated," she began, her voice barely a whisper. “Adrian got into serious debt. Gambling debts. He owed a lot of money to some very dangerous people.” She explained that Adrian had staged his own death to escape the creditors, using insurance money to pay off his debts and start a new life. “He thought it was the only way to protect us, to protect *you*. He was terrified they would come after you if he couldn’t pay.”

“He just…disappeared?” I asked, my voice hollow. “He contacted a friend, someone who specialized in…making people disappear. He provided a false death certificate, arranged the accident scene to look real. It was all meticulously planned, but terrible.” She confessed that she’d helped him, believing it was the only way to save her son. "He swore he'd contact you once everything was settled, once he was safe. But...he got involved with Daniel's business, and things got complicated again. He couldn’t risk exposing himself.”
