A gasp escaped Jocelyn’s lips. Her face, usually a mask of carefully applied makeup, began to crumble. She looked around at the assembled guests, her eyes darting from face to face. The air hung heavy with anticipation. I braced myself for the explosion that was surely coming.

Chapter 3: The Truth Unravels

Jocelyn’s scream pierced the air, a high-pitched, desperate sound that cut through the polite murmur of the wedding guests. “What is the meaning of this?! This is… this is humiliating!” She snatched a photograph from the crate – Jessi, about five years old, beaming as she held up a drawing for Jocelyn – and ripped it in two.

“It’s a reminder, Mom,” Jessi said, her voice now devoid of all softness. “A reminder of the love you threw away for a Mercedes and a trip to the Caribbean. A reminder of the years you spent ignoring our birthdays, missing our recitals, pretending we didn’t exist.”

A wave of murmurs rippled through the crowd. Even Trent, who had arrived with Jocelyn, looked uncomfortable. He attempted to soothe his wife, placing a hand on her arm. “Jocelyn, darling, let’s just go. This is… inappropriate.”

Jocelyn shrugged off his hand. “This isn’t about appropriateness, Trent! This is about… about spite! Luca is deliberately trying to embarrass me!” But the anger in her voice felt hollow, forced. I sensed something else, something deeper, bubbling beneath the surface.

“It’s not about embarrassing you, Mom,” Jessi continued, her gaze unwavering. “It’s about the truth.” She turned to me and nodded. I took a deep breath and stepped forward. “There’s something else, Jocelyn. Something you should know. We found these photos and sweaters while cleaning out your storage unit. We also found something else… a box of unopened letters. Letters you wrote to us, over the years. Letters you never sent.”

Jocelyn’s face drained of all color. Her carefully constructed facade was finally crumbling. She stared at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and shame. What secrets were hidden in those letters? What had driven her to abandon her daughters, not just for wealth, but for something else entirely?

Chapter 4: The Unsent Letters

“Letters?” Jocelyn repeated, her voice a raspy whisper. “What letters? I… I don’t know what you’re talking about.” But her denial lacked conviction. I signaled to another groomsman, who brought forward a small, antique wooden box. Inside, nestled among tissue paper, were dozens of envelopes, each addressed in Jocelyn’s elegant handwriting to one of her daughters.

Jessi carefully selected one, addressed to herself. With trembling hands, she opened it and began to read aloud. “’My dearest Jessi, I watch you from afar, and my heart aches. I see your achievements, your kindness, your beauty, and I’m filled with regret. I know I’ve made a terrible mistake, but I was trapped… I was afraid…’” She paused, her voice choked with emotion.
