The Officer's Grave News
My heart raced as the officer's voice echoed in my mind. "Do you have any idea what your daughter has done?" It felt like a cruel joke. My mind scrambled, searching for answers while fear twisted my stomach.
"What do you mean? Is she okay?" I demanded, my voice trembling. The officers exchanged another glance, their expressions guarded, as if they were bracing for the worst.
“There’s been an incident, sir,” one of them said, hesitation clouding his tone. “We can’t share all the details right now.”
“No! I need to know. Is she hurt? Where is she?”
With every passing second, Ainsley's smiling face flashed in my mind. How could the girl who dreamed of being a veterinarian end up in trouble? The same daughter who volunteered at the animal shelter, who would drop everything just to help a friend in need.
I could feel panic rising, a thick, heavy fog consuming my thoughts. “Just tell me what she did!”
“We need to verify some details first,” the officer replied, his voice steady but urgent.
“I’m her father! I deserve to know!” My voice cracked under the pressure. The unease lingered, thickening the air around us.
A Shattering Revelation
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the officer sighed. “Ainsley was found at the scene of a robbery. There's been an injury.”
In that moment, disbelief washed over me like ice water. “No, that’s impossible! She wouldn’t—”
The officer’s gaze didn’t waver. “I’m afraid she’s involved. The details are still unfolding.”
My thoughts spiraled. This wasn't Ainsley. Crime? It was against everything I had taught her. I pictured her laughing with friends, sharing her dreams of the future. How could this happen?
Just then, my phone buzzed, cutting through the haze of confusion. I grabbed it, my heart pounding, and saw Ainsley’s best friend’s name lighting up the screen. “Come to the police station NOW. It’s serious! Ainsley... she might be a suspect in something worse.”
Cold dread settled in my chest. What could be worse than this?
I stared at the screen, my mind racing. The weight of uncertainty pressed down on me as the officers continued talking, their voices fading into the background. I had to get to her. I had to protect her. But how?
