Mother's Desperate Search for Missing Son Leads to Unexpected Encounter

Mother's Desperate Search for Missing Son Leads to Unexpected Encounter
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 3

Suddenly, the young woman stopped pacing and looked directly at the window, her eyes meeting mine. She didn’t smile, didn’t wave, didn’t even flinch. She simply stared, a silent plea in her gaze. Then, she turned and said something to the old man. He looked up, and for a split second, his eyes locked with mine. And in that moment, I saw something that chilled me to the bone: a flicker of…guilt?

Chapter 3: The Old Man's Story

I couldn't stay hidden any longer. I walked to the front door and knocked, my knuckles rapping against the weathered wood. After a long, tense silence, the young woman opened the door, her expression guarded. “Can I help you?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

“I…I saw the man with my son’s jacket,” I stammered, my voice shaking. “I just want to know where he got it.” She hesitated, then stepped aside, allowing me to enter. The room was small and sparsely furnished, with a musty smell hanging in the air. The old man, whose name I learned was Silas, sat at the table, his hands clasped tightly together. He avoided my gaze.

“He found him, ma’am,” the young woman, Sarah, said softly. “About a year ago. He was…lost. Confused. He said he’d run away from home. Silas took him in. He offered him food, a place to sleep.” Silas finally looked up, his eyes filled with a deep sorrow. “The boy…he didn’t say much about his life before. He just wanted to be left alone.”

“Daniel?” I breathed, my voice catching in my throat. “Did he…did he say his name was Daniel?” Silas shook his head slowly. “He called himself ‘Cole’. He was…troubled. He’d been through something. He didn't want to talk about it.” Sarah added, “He was saving money to get back home, he said. But…he got sick. Really sick. Silas nursed him back to health, but…he just wasn't the same after that.”

Chapter 4: The Hidden Ledger

“Sick with what?” I asked, my voice barely audible. Sarah and Silas exchanged a nervous glance. “He didn’t go to a doctor,” Sarah said hesitantly. “He…he was afraid. He said he didn’t want anyone to know.” Silas chimed in, “He believed someone was looking for him, and he didn’t want to be found.” The pieces didn’t fit. Daniel was athletic, healthy, a star soccer player. He wouldn’t just…disappear and refuse medical attention.

Driven by a desperate need to understand, I began to look around the room. My gaze fell upon a small wooden chest tucked away in a corner. “What’s in there?” I asked, pointing to it. Sarah’s face paled. “Nothing,” she said quickly, too quickly. “Just…old things.” I gently opened the chest, ignoring Sarah’s protests. Inside, I found a stack of notebooks, filled with meticulous handwriting. It was a ledger, detailing expenses, income, and…names.
