Marrying a Wealthy Widower to Protect His Final Days Revealed Secrets I Never Expected to Uncover

Marrying a Wealthy Widower to Protect His Final Days Revealed Secrets I Never Expected to Uncover Save

Confrontation

I took a deep breath, gathering my courage before stepping into the lawyer's office. Arthur’s children were huddled together, their voices sharp and accusatory. "You had no right to marry him," the eldest, Claire, spat, her eyes narrowing like a hawk’s. “You just wanted his money!”

“That’s not true,” I replied, my voice trembling. “I loved him. He was alone, and I was there for him.” I felt the weight of their piercing glares, but I needed to push through. “We shared something special.”

“Special?” snorted Ryan, the middle child. “You mean you preyed on his vulnerability. You took advantage of him!”

As I opened my mouth to defend myself, Claire stepped closer, her presence suffocating. “Don’t you dare act innocent. We know what you are. Just watch your back, because if you think you’re getting away with this, you’re dead wrong.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, anxiety knotting my stomach. I had thought I could reason with them, but now I felt the tides turning. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“Oh, but what if we talk about your past?” Ryan's voice dripped with menace. “What if we tell everyone about that little incident back in ’98? You’d be ruined.”

Stunned, I stumbled back. My heart raced, wondering how they knew. Would they really use my past to destroy me, all to protect their claim to their father's wealth? Just as I thought I might get through to them, I realized they were cornering me in an entirely different way.

Seeking Solace

My legs felt like lead as I left the lawyer’s office. I needed air, but more than that, I needed someone to understand. I rushed to Margaret’s room, the only place that felt safe. She opened the door immediately, concern etched across her face.

“What happened?” she asked, her voice steadying me. I poured out everything—the confrontation, the accusations, and the threat that had left me shaken. Margaret listened intently, her expression growing more serious with each word.

“They’re just scared, Edith,” she said softly. “But this is about more than just money, and you have to be careful.”

As I shared my fears, Margaret’s brow furrowed. “I overheard them talking,” she whispered, glancing around as if the walls had ears. “About a life insurance policy that implicates you in Arthur's death. They… they think you could be responsible.”

A chill raced down my spine. “What?” I gasped, the realization hitting me like a punch to the gut. “They would go that far?”

“I think they would,” she replied, her tone grave. “They’ll stop at nothing to protect their inheritance.”

My mind whirled as I processed what she had said. The walls of my world were closing in, and trust I had once felt began to unravel. As I realized the implications of this, I started to question if Arthur's death was truly as peaceful as it seemed.
