I’m a Husband Who Lost His Son, His Wife, and Everything After My Secret Affair Was Unraveled

I’m a Husband Who Lost His Son, His Wife, and Everything After My Secret Affair Was Unraveled Save

The Midnight Meeting

The text from my attorney, Mr. Thompson, was cryptic: "Come." It was followed by an address to a downtown parking garage. My heart pounded as I drove, the GPS leading me through the dimly lit streets of Greenwich. The city was quiet, the only sounds the hum of my car and the distant rush of traffic.

I arrived at the parking garage, the air thick with the smell of asphalt and exhaust. My hands shook as I parked and made my way to the designated spot. Mr. Thompson was already there, standing next to his car, a manila envelope in hand.

“Mr. Carter,” he said, his voice low and urgent. “I have something you need to see.”

I stepped closer, my eyes adjusting to the dim light. “What is it?”

He handed me the envelope. “A safety deposit box key and a USB drive. They belong to Claire.”

“Claire?” I repeated, my mind racing. “What’s on the USB?”

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “But whatever it is, it’s important. And opening it will change everything.”

My fingers trembled as I took the envelope. “Why are you showing me this now?”

“Because you need to know what you’re up against,” he replied. “Trust me, this is just the beginning.”

With that, he turned and walked away, the envelope heavy in my hand. I stood there, the cold night air biting at my skin, feeling a mix of fear and determination. I knew I had to find out what was on that USB drive, no matter the cost.

I drove home, the envelope burning a hole in my pocket. The house was silent as I slipped inside, my steps cautious. I went straight to Claire’s study, the room she had always kept locked. I had never tried to enter it before, but now, I was driven by a desperate need to uncover the truth.

The Hidden Safe

The study was dark, the only light coming from the moon through the windows. I found the key for the safe hidden behind a painting, just as Claire had always kept it. My hands shook as I inserted the key and turned it. The lock clicked open, and I pulled the door wide.

Inside, I found the USB drive, along with a video diary. My heart raced as I inserted the USB into my laptop. The screen flickered to life, and I saw Claire’s face, her eyes filled with determination and pain.

“I knew it was only a matter of time,” she said, her voice steady. “So I’ve been documenting everything.”

The video cut to a scene in a hotel lobby. Claire was standing in front of Vanessa, her voice shaking with anger. “Where is Noah?” she demanded. “You took him from me, didn’t you?”

Vanessa’s eyes widened in surprise. “I didn’t take him. I swear. I’ve been trying to find him too.”

Claire’s voice broke. “Then who has him? Who are you working with?”

Vanessa’s face showed genuine fear. “I don’t know. But I’ve been blackmailed. They’re using this against me.”

I watched in horror as the video continued, my mind processing the implications. Claire had been planning this, gathering evidence, trying to find Noah. And now, I had the key to it all.

Just as I was about to eject the USB, a sudden crash shattered the silence. I spun around, my heart pounding. The window exploded, glass raining down as Vanessa’s car slammed into the side of the house. Before I could react, a masked figure burst through the broken window, snatching the USB from my hand and fleeing into the night.

Confrontation with Vanessa

I stood at the cracked door of Vanessa’s fifth‑floor walk‑up, heart pounding like a drum.

She opened it, hair mussed, eyes rimmed with sweat, a faint perfume of cheap incense clinging to her skin.

“You came back,” she whispered, half‑laugh, half‑cry.

“You have something that belongs to me,” I said, stepping inside, the hallway glinting with flickering fluorescent light.

She swallowed, glanced at the half‑empty fridge, then at the window where rain traced thin veins.

“The USB,” I demanded, “the one I saw on the footage.”

She laughed, a brittle sound, and reached for a drawer.

“It’s not just a video,” she said, pulling out a crumpled envelope. “Someone else’s been watching us.”

She slid a torn piece of paper across the table; the edges were jagged, the ink smeared.

“It’s a code,” she breathed, eyes darting to the hallway as if expecting a knock.

“Who’s blackmailing you?” I asked, fingers tightening around the paper.
