I Won’t Let My Fiancé Choose Between My Twins and Our Future, So I Made Him Face His Own Choice

I Won’t Let My Fiancé Choose Between My Twins and Our Future, So I Made Him Face His Own Choice Save

Beat 1 – The Money Trail

The twins were sprawled on the carpet, their tiny legs kicking as they built a tower of blocks, the soft whisper of their giggles filling the living room.

I walked to the kitchen table, opened the bank app, and stared at the red arrows draining our joint account. Each transfer was labeled “E‑Ventures” and dated a week apart.

Elliot was in the doorway, his eyes flicking from the screen to the boys.

“What the hell is this, Elliot?” I asked, voice tight, feeling the cold tile under my feet.

He swallowed, his jaw working. “It’s just a loan,” he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.

“A loan from who?” I pressed, heart thudding as I watched one of the twins tumble his block, giggling.

He hesitated, the mask of confidence cracking. “I’m in debt, okay? I’m trying to get us out of the hole.”

His desperation was palpable, a low hum of anxiety that matched the ticking clock on the wall.

“You think stealing from us is the answer?” I snapped, feeling the heat rise.

He opened his mouth to argue, but the twins’ soft whine for their favorite stuffed rabbit cut through the tension, and I grabbed the rabbit, feeling its worn fur under my fingers.

Beat 2 – The Threat

“If you can’t afford us, maybe you should hand the boys over to someone else,” Elliot said, voice low, eyes darting to the stuffed animals clutched in my hand.

“Someone I know,” he added, a sneer curling his lips.

I tightened my grip on the rabbit and the other plush bear, both frayed from years of comfort.

“You’re not taking my brothers to a ‘temporary guardian’,” I said, the words sharp as the twins’ crayons scattered across the rug.

He stepped closer, the tension in his shoulders like a coiled spring. “It’s just until we get the money back. You’ll thank me later.”

My mind raced, the weight of the twins’ lives pressing down. I lifted the stuffed animals, holding them up like a shield.

“Give them back, or I’ll call the police.”

He laughed, a harsh, brittle sound that echoed off the walls. “Fine. You win.”

Just as I felt the tide turning, the front door slammed open. Officer Ramirez stood in the doorway, his badge glinting, eyes fierce.

“Ms. Harper, I’m placing a restraining order on Mr. Lawson effective immediately,” he declared, voice booming, halting Elliot’s breath in an instant.

Officer Ramirez Breaks the News

Ramirez stepped into the cramped kitchen, his badge glinting under the flickering light.

“You need to listen carefully,” he said, voice low, eyes scanning the worn linoleum.

I felt the twins tug at my sleeve, their stuffed bears clutched tight, eyes wide with a curiosity that turned into dread the moment the officer spoke.

“Your fiancé’s partner—Mason—was arrested last night for embezzling over two million from a construction fund.”

My heart slammed against my ribs; I could almost hear the click of a lock turning somewhere deep inside me.

Ramirez continued, “The money they stole was part of a larger fraud ring. Mason’s name showed up in a federal ledger, and Elliot’s signature was on several of the same false invoices.”

“So you’re saying he’s complicit?” I whispered, each word tasting like ash.

He nodded, his expression hardening. “We have a warrant for his arrest. But there’s more.”
