Confrontation at the Cake

Sophie’s hands still trembled as she stepped forward, the sting of the camera flash still fresh in her mind.

“What are you doing, Daniel?” she shouted, voice cracking, eyes locked on the bottle he still clutched.

The room fell silent, every guest’s gaze snapping from the gleaming silver spoon to the nervous groom.

“It’s nothing,” Daniel tried to smile, but his lips trembled, his eyes darting to the frosting as if it might betray him.

“Explain the bottle,” Sophie demanded, holding up the photo on her phone, the blurry image a silent accusation.

Whispers rose like a tide, the quartet’s strings hanging mid‑note, waiting for the next move.

“It’s just a prop, a… a decorative piece,” Daniel stammered, his voice thin against the swelling pressure of the crowd.

From the edge of the ballroom, Dr. Michael Harper pushed forward, his white coat catching the chandelier’s light.

He lifted a compact testing kit, the metal case clicking open with a practiced motion.

“If there’s anything in that frosting, I’ll find it,” he said, eyes sharp, voice calm but edged with urgency.

Sophie felt a flicker of hope; the toxicologist’s presence turned the scene from a frantic accusation to a scientific showdown.

“Everyone, stay where you are,” Dr. Harper instructed, his hand steady as he approached the cake, the cursed bottle glinting behind Daniel’s shoulder.

The guests shifted, some clutching their champagne glasses, others whispering prayers, all awaiting the verdict that could either save or condemn.

Harper’s Test and the Sudden Darkness

Dr. Harper scooped a tiny spoonful of frosting, the sweet vanilla scent mingling with a faint metallic tang that made Sophie’s stomach clench.

He placed the sample into a handheld analyzer, the device humming softly as it began its rapid assessment.

The ballroom held its breath, the hushed awe of the powdered crystal display a stark contrast to the earlier chaos.

“Result pending,” the machine whispered, a tiny screen flickering to life.

In a flash of green and red, a warning appeared: Sedative Detected – Low Concentration.

Sophie’s heart slammed against her ribs; the confirmation was both a triumph and a terror.

Olivia’s smile faltered, her eyes glazing as the sedative took hold, a subtle droop pulling her shoulders down.

“Olivia!” someone cried, but the bride’s words came out as a muffled slur, her head tilting forward.

Guests surged forward, some trying to lift her, others scrambling to find a phone, but the heavy oak doors that sealed the hall remained stubbornly shut.

“The doors are locked from the inside!” a panicked voice shouted, echoing off the marble columns.

Dr. Harper moved to the nearest exit, slamming his palm against the wood, his breath ragged.

Suddenly, the chandeliers sputtered, the golden glow dimming to a faint ember before snapping off entirely.

The ballroom plunged into black, a collective gasp rising from the darkness.

A muffled scream ripped through the silence, echoing from the kitchen, raw and terrified.

Everyone froze, the unknown terror pressing against their nerves as the night swallowed the hall whole.

Emergency Lights Reveal the Hidden Door

The emergency bulbs flickered on, casting a pale amber glow over the stunned crowd.
