I Watch My Mother Shatter My Birthday Cake and Then Realize I Must Shield My Pregnant Wife

I Watch My Mother Shatter My Birthday Cake and Then Realize I Must Shield My Pregnant Wife Save

Shattered Entrance

Flowers tremble in my hand as the door clicks shut behind me.

The marble floor glistens with spilt syrup, rose petals, and a ruined cake.

My wife's damp blouse clings to her knees, her fingers scrubbing furiously.

She doesn't look up; the soap suds cling to the corners of her mouth.

"I—" she starts, but the words die in the steam of her breath.

On the couch, my mother sits perfectly still, her eyes cold as the marble.

She doesn't flinch as the scent of crushed frosting fills the room.

I plant the bouquet on the coffee table, the stems wilting against the chaos.

"What… what happened?" My voice cracks, a thin ribbon of panic.

She turns her head slowly, the creases of her face deepening.

My wife's shoulders tense, her hand stilled mid‑stroke.

She looks at me, eyes wide, the tremor in her hands now a tremor in her entire being.

The silence hangs, broken only by the faint hiss of water drips.

My heart pounds like a drum, each beat echoing against the shattered celebration.

Demand and Denial

"Explain," I demand, voice low, hands still clutching the wilted blooms.

My mother lifts a manicured finger, her gaze unblinking.

"I threw it," she says, the words crisp, unapologetic.

"Because I never approved of you… of this marriage." She pauses, as if tasting the confession.

My wife's breath catches, a gasp swallowed by a sob that never leaves her throat.

"You… you called the police?" I roar, the words ricocheting off the walls.

She lifts a sleek black phone, the screen glowing with a message: **Authorities notified**.

"I have already spoken to them," my mother replies, voice flat as stone.

"They’ll take her away," she adds, a cruel smile curling at the edge of her mouth.

My wife's eyes widen, the horror plain as the broken cake beneath her.

She clutches my arm, trembling, the weight of unborn life pressing against her belly.

Time seems to freeze; the air thickens with the scent of betrayal.

I stare at my mother, the woman who raised me, now a stranger wielding a phone like a weapon.

She slams the device onto the coffee table, the impact echoing like a judge's gavel.
