I Was in Labor Alone on the Kitchen Floor While My Husband Celebrated His Mother’s Birthday Without Me

I Was in Labor Alone on the Kitchen Floor While My Husband Celebrated His Mother’s Birthday Without Me Save

In the Hospital

Bright lights pierced through the haze of pain as I was wheeled into the operating room, the echo of my heart pounding in my ears. “We need to act fast,” a voice said, distant yet commanding. My eyes darted around, taking in the sterile white walls and the frantic movement of nurses and doctors. Where was Ethan?

“Hold on, Rebecca,” a doctor said, leaning over me. “We’re going to do everything we can for you and the baby.” My breath hitched as another contraction gripped me, a wave of sharp agony that knotted my stomach. I tried to focus on their faces but the pain eclipsed all else.

“You’re going to feel some pressure,” a nurse assured me. I couldn’t help but wonder if Ethan was even thinking of me, or if he was happily clinking glasses with his mother. He wasn’t here. He never was.

“Please, just tell me my baby is okay,” I murmured, panic rising. The nurse nodded, but her eyes told a different story. I caught the word “distress” among the hurried conversation around me—my heart sank. What if I lost my child?

The world around me faded as they prepped for the cesarean. The beeping monitors, the cold steel of instruments—everything melded into a blur, until the sharp sensation of needles brought me back. “You’ll feel drowsy soon,” a voice floated in. “Just breathe.”

Recovery in the Maternity Ward

As I lay in the maternity ward, an unfamiliar silence wrapped around me. I was free from the pain of labor but trapped in a new kind of anxiety. What would I say to Ethan when he finally called?

My phone vibrated on the bedside table, and my heart raced. It was him. “Rebecca? I had to leave the dinner early,” he sounded annoyed. “Do you know how hard it is to get everyone together?”

“Ethan, the baby—” I started, but he cut me off. “I mean, I just got two bites of cake, and Linda was going to give her speech.” My frustration boiled over. “It’s not about the cake! I’m here alone in the hospital, and our baby is—”

“I can’t believe you’re still acting like this over a dinner,” he sighed. “We’ve been through so much. Can’t you wait until I get there?”

As the call ended, I couldn't suppress a shudder. I overheard a nurse whispering nearby, something about my blood pressure—not good, critical even. Fear gripped me. What did that mean for me? For my baby?

Sweat beaded on my forehead, and just as I tried to process the weight of their whispered words, everything went dark. The power went out.

My heart raced as alarms began to blare, echoing through the ward. Nurses rushed by, their faces filled with urgency and fear. What was happening? I felt the walls closing in as chaos erupted around me.

Chaos in the Maternity Ward

The lights flicker, then plunge us into darkness. Heart racing, I grip the sides of my bed, straining to hear above the nervous chatter of nurses and the distant beeping of machines.

“What’s happening?” I call out, my voice shaky. A nurse rushes past, her expression a blend of urgency and fear.

“Stay calm!” she shouts, her tone sharp. “Possible evacuation. There’s a security threat outside.”

My mind races to Ethan. What if he’s caught up in whatever is happening? I glance at the door, praying I’ll see him walk through, but all I get is silence.
