I Was Alone on the Kitchen Floor in Labor While My Husband Celebrated His Mother’s Birthday Without a Care in the World

I Was Alone on the Kitchen Floor in Labor While My Husband Celebrated His Mother’s Birthday Without a Care in the World Save

Part 5: An Unwelcome Welcome Home

The door creaked as I pushed it open, the familiar scent of home feeling foreign after my time in the hospital. My heart quickened when I noticed the crumpled note on the kitchen counter, its presence jarring against the sterile calm I had just left behind.

"Rebecca," it began, the words almost leaping off the page. "Sorry for my delay. Work obligations kept me from checking in." The tone was patronizing, as if I were a child expecting attention.

I crumpled the note in my fist.

“Work obligations?” I mumbled, pacing the small space. “What could possibly be more important than *this*?”

Just then, Ethan sauntered in, a casual smile plastered on his face. It vanished as he caught sight of my expression. “You’re home. That’s great,” he said, though his eyes flickered with something unreadable.

“You think this is great?” I shot back, my voice rising as anger surged within me. “You think leaving me alone in labor was okay? I could have died!”

His jaw set, a wall rising between us. “You're playing the victim here, Rebecca. It was a tough night, but I had responsibilities. You know how my mother…”

“Your mother? This isn’t about her!”

His eyes narrowed. “Well, maybe you should have thought of that before you decided to have a baby.”

I blinked, the weight of his words crashing down like a tidal wave. “I can’t believe you just said that,” I whispered. Confusion swirled within me, the pain of betrayal spiraling deeper. Was he really prioritizing his family over our child?

Part 6: A Shocking Discovery

The next few days felt like wading through molasses. The strength I had drawn from my mother’s support slipped away as I stood in the baby’s room, cradling the blanket I had picked out. It smelled faintly of lavender, a reminder of softer days before everything went wrong.

As I organized tiny clothes and toys, I noticed a small drawer in the changing table that I hadn’t seen before. Curiosity piqued, I pulled it open, revealing a collection of receipts and scattered items. My fingers trembled as I dug deeper, and that’s when I found it: a photograph.

My breath hitched.

There was Ethan, arms wrapped around a woman who looked strikingly like me, laughing in a sun-soaked park. A knot twisted in my stomach as I flipped it over, revealing a date from just days before I went into labor.

This was no coincidence. I rifled through the receipts—restaurants, hotels, the unmistakable evidence of a life I was not part of. The realization crashed through me like a freight train; he had been cheating on me. He had planned to leave me, to walk away the moment I became a burden with the baby.

The truth settled heavy in my chest.

It all made sense now. The dismissive tone, the neglect. I stumbled back, the room spinning. I had to confront him, but a chilling thought crept in: what was left to say when the man I had loved for years had built a life of deception right beneath my nose?
