I Was Alone on the Kitchen Floor, in Labor, While My Husband Chose His Mother’s Birthday Over Me

Awakening to Uncertainty
Rebecca blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights, her head pounding with confusion. A white ceiling loomed above her, sterile and indifferent.
“Where... where’s my baby?” she croaked, her voice barely a whisper.
A nurse quickly approached, her face a mask of professional concern. “You had a boy, but he’s in critical condition,” she said gently. “We need to monitor you first.”
Panic surged through Rebecca. “What do you mean, critical? What happened?”
“There were complications during labor. The doctors are doing everything they can.”
Each word felt like a dagger. She struggled to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over her. Ethan. Where was he?
Just then, the door swung open, and there he was—Ethan, looking as if he had seen a ghost. His face was pale, eyes wide with shock. She could feel a tumult of emotions swirling inside her: anger, betrayal, and a lingering fear.
“You came,” she said, surprised at the sharpness in her own voice. “After two days.”
“I—I had to—” he stammered, running a hand through his hair. “I didn’t know. I didn’t get the call until later.”
“And you thought leaving me was okay? I was alone!”
Confronting the Truth
“Rebecca, please. I rushed back as soon as I heard.” His voice was strained, almost pleading.
“Rushed back? You left me in labor on the floor. You chose your mother's birthday over me!”
"I had a family emergency," he shot back, frustration breaking through. “You don’t understand.”
“Then make me understand, Ethan! You weren’t there when I needed you the most,” she shouted, bitterness spilling out with each breath.
“I didn’t know you were in this much pain. If I could have been there, I would have!”
Their eyes met, and for a moment, the chaos of the room faded. But the silence was shattered when the door opened again, and a doctor stepped inside, face grave.
“Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, I need to discuss your son’s condition.”
Rebecca felt her heart race as dread pooled in her stomach. “What’s wrong with him?”
The doctor shifted uncomfortably. “He’s stable for now, but there are serious concerns…”
Ethan’s jaw clenched. “Serious concerns? What do you mean?”
“We need to prepare for the possibility of lasting health issues.”
Before Rebecca could register the weight of those words, Ethan’s voice broke through her panic. “I’ve been thinking—about us. I was considering a divorce before the baby was born.”
Time stood still, the doctor’s voice fading into the background as the truth hung in the air between them like a lead weight.
