St. Jude's ER – The Moment the Doors Opened

The fluorescent lights flickered as I burst through the swinging doors, my coat flapping like a wounded bird.

“Rebecca Vance?” a nurse shouted, eyes wide, clutching a clipboard.

“Yes,” I whispered, feeling the floor vibrate with the thrum of the emergency heart monitor.

On the gurney, Julian lay half‑conscious, his torso glued to Clarissa’s in a grotesque, shining paste that smelled of industrial solvent.

“He’s… he’s stuck to her,” the surgeon muttered, peering through the fluorescent glare.

“We need to cut the adhesive, now!” another voice demanded, the scalpel flashing in the harsh light.

I watched the team wrestle with the sticky nightmare, their hands slipping, the glue oozing like quick‑set cement.

Clarissa’s eyes fluttered, a thin line of blood tracing her cheek. Julian’s fingers twitched, as if trying to pull free.

“Do you know what you’ve done?” a doctor snarled, glancing at me.

My throat tightened; the truffles I’d left on the kitchen counter felt suddenly irrelevant.

“I—” I started, but the sound of a metal clamp biting into the adhesive drowned my voice.

Blood spattered, the adhesive hardened, and the room smelled of burnt rubber and desperation.

Adhesive on the Table and the Hidden USB

One surgeon leaned in, his scalpel poised, and whispered, “The glue’s seeping into the table. If it sets, they’ll be fused forever.”

A panicked nurse rushed over, her breath ragged. “Doctor, the polymer’s reacting with the laminate! We can’t—”

My heart hammered; I could feel the weight of the secret I’d carried in my coat.

“Rebecca, step back,” the surgeon barked, eyes flicking to the dark bag at my side.

I hesitated, the bag’s zipper catching my fingers. Inside, the USB glimmered like a promise.

“What’s that?” the nurse asked, eyes narrowing.

“Just… something I need to give you,” I said, voice trembling.

She snatched the bag, pulling the small drive free.

“You know what this is, right? This could end everything.”

Before I could answer, the fire alarm screamed, a shrill wail that ripped through the sterile chaos.

Water erupted from the overhead sprinklers, a torrent of cold spray flooding the operating room.

The USB slipped from my hand, spinning, then vanishing into the floodwater as the alarms blared louder, leaving me staring at the rising tide of uncertainty.

Surgeon’s Demand

“Hand it over,” the lead surgeon barked, his gloved hand hovering over the adhesive‑smeared table.

I felt the cold metal of the USB against my palm, the weight of a secret I’d carried like a stone.

“You know this could ruin everything,” I whispered, voice trembling.

He didn’t answer, he just snatched the drive, his eyes flicking to Julian’s contorted face.

“Plug it into the secure terminal. We need to know what we’re cutting into.”

The nurse hurried to the computer, her fingers dancing over the keyboard as the OR lights hummed.
