I Uncovered My Husband’s Secret Scheme and Chose Divorce Over Becoming His Mother’s Silent Accountant

I Uncovered My Husband’s Secret Scheme and Chose Divorce Over Becoming His Mother’s Silent Accountant Save

Either you clean my mother’s apartment tonight, or I’m filing for divorce tomorrow.

“Either you clean my mother’s apartment tonight, or I’m filing for divorce tomorrow,” Ethan snarled, his voice echoing off the cheap wallpaper.

I stared at the couch where his mother, Margaret, lay draped in a threadbare blanket, her chin tucked into a pillow.

“You’ve been living off my paycheck for six months,” I said, feeling the weight of every unpaid bill in my chest.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” he muttered, eyes flicking to the beer can in my hand.

He shoved the can back onto the coffee table, the clink ringing like a gunshot.

“You think you can keep using Mom as a crutch?” I asked, voice low.

Margaret’s eyes widened, a silent plea flickering across her face.

“She’s staying here,” Ethan said, turning his back on us.

“You’re not paying for anything,” I snapped, feeling the anger rise like a tide.

“If you want the keys, you have to ask,” he whispered, a thin smile forming.

My fingers tightened around the remote, the light from the TV flickering across my skin.

“Give me the spare key to the apartment,” I demanded, the words crisp and final.

The room seemed to hold its breath.

Ethan’s shoulders slumped, the threat of divorce hanging heavy.

“Fine,” he said, sliding the key across the coffee table.

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears I couldn’t read.

“I’m taking control,” I whispered, pocketing the key, the decision already made.

Searching Margaret’s Apartment

The drive down the rusted staircase of the old building felt like a descent into someone else’s secrets.

Margaret’s door was slightly ajar, a thin sliver of stale air leaking out.

I pushed it open, the scent of old laundry and mildew hitting me like a wave.

Cluttered stacks of magazines, mismatched chairs, and a shattered picture frame littered the living room.

Every surface was a mess, as if someone had rummaged through a life and left the pieces behind.

My eyes scanned the walls, landing on a faded oil painting of a sailing ship.

Behind it, a faint outline of wood suggested something was hidden.

I slipped the painting aside, feeling a cool metal latch give way.

A shallow depression in the plaster revealed a small, rusted safe.

My heart hammered as I fumbled with the combination, the clicks echoing in the cramped space.

The door swung open, revealing stacks of cash, a crumpled loan agreement signed in Ethan’s shaky hand, and a black‑and‑white photo of Margaret with a man whose face I recognized—Detective Harris.

Before I could process it, a muffled sob rose from the bedroom down the hallway.

It was thin, desperate, as if someone were trapped behind a wall of silence.
